SOURCE: how do i change ball bearings on tiller shaft

Hello mikeant2:

Usually Heat and a Press/Puller are Required to Remove the Bearing from the Shaft. Sometimes I have even had to Cut the Bearings Off with a Die Grinder.

SOURCE: Roper tiller 26 inch front tine Pulley/belt diagram

I am not sure either, but I think that it would be alot cheeper to buy a new tiller, than to use your strenght fixing a old tiller that you didn't bother to keep the instructions for (no, I am not trying to be harsh. I am trying to be nice. and I am not sure about it coming with instructions, they usually do.)

Here is a link that may help. SOURCE: 2 cycle Murray Ultra front tines, quit pulling,

I had the same problem. It turns out the gear box was bone dry.
Remove both the left side tines, there is a grease fitting below and
to the right of the tine shaft. Before adding grease remove the air vent screw
which is located above and a little to the left of the tine shaft.(It has a slotted head)
Pump in grease until it comes out the air vent. Replace the air vent screw and the tines.

It appeared to me that there was probably never any grease in it
as it took quite a lot to fill and when it finally came out the air vent it was
new grease, not discolored like you would expect to see when you
would be pushing some old grease out with the new.

The rear tine seals are leaking ive taken the bolts out but the tines will not come off what can i do

You could try putting the tiller to use, preferably where it will have to work hard to till the ground it unsuccessful you may need a torch and some good old fashion luck to loosen tines from shaft. Now consider this; if the bearings are worn so that the shaft is loose new seals will not hold up and you will risk doing further damage to the worm gear located on rear shaft and possibly other damage to your transmission from contaminated oil.

How does the gear box come apart on a six horse troy built tiller?

  1. Remove belt guard on left side
  2. Remove belt, large pulley on gearbox.
  3. Remove throttle cable, idler pulley cable and shift handle.
  4. Remove engine, handle, wheels, tines cover and tines.
  5. Lay gearbox on side on two sawhorses, left side facing up
  6. Remove all the nuts on that side. If the three shafts have corrosion, use sandpaper to remove.
  7. Pry the two halves apart, then hammer the ends of the three shafts to push through their bushings. Use brass or wood to avoid blossoming the shaft ends. When shafts are through their bushings, the right side will fall away.

I need to remove a bent blade on a yard machines 42 inch deck.

To remove the blades from a tiller, all you need to do is pull the pins out of the blades at the shaft and remove the offending blade. If it is an inner blade, it too will have a pin. The pins have a head on one end, pass through the shaft, and a locking pin through the other end.

How do I remove the wheels on a 1985 Troy Built Horse Rototiller?

Horse wheels are held on with a single roll pin. Pound out the roll pin and pray.....that the rims aren't rusted to the shaft. If the rims are rusted to the shaft, you have two choices. You can either put the new tires or tubes on the rim with the rim on the shaft...or you can work at getting the rims off the shaft. If you put tubes in, be sure the rim is free of sharp edges.....or you'll be sorry.

To get the rims off if they're rusted on, I've used a variety of techniques over the years. The most effective is to weld a nut on the spot where you removed the end caps. Use a nut that's the same thread as your bearing puller. Then use the bolt from your bearing puller to put pressure on the end of the shaft, pulling the rim off. A torch helps, but be careful or you'll be putting new seals in too.

Troy Bilt Tiller tines do not engage

You likely have a clutch problem, never saw one that a simple adjustment would fix. I'd take off the tiller (there are two bolts that hold the tiller portion to the transmission, and check to make sure the clutch is sliding in and out. My hunch is either the lever is loose on the shaft or the allen-head little bolt that they use to shift the clutch has come out. Be sure to grease the clutch while you're in there.

This should be covered in your owners manual. Shame on them if they didn't mention this.

How to lock drive shaft to change reverse disk?

I just changed the belts on my tiller, and had the same problem..The manual says to be on the left side of machine and with a box end wrench on the bolt, "hit with a hammer"..use a brass or lead hammer..
This sometimes works, but you still have to tighten it when you are done!
My tiller has electric start, so the easy way was to remove starter and position a piece of wood against the ring gear.

Tine shaft removal for mantis 2 cycle tiller

Put the tiller in a vise clamping on the bottom of worm gear housing. Remove worm gear housing cover. Clamp the worm gear at the top with a vise grip (I think Kuya Jon is correct in that you could skip this step because the transmission won't move when unscrewing, but I did it anyway just in case). Put a pipe wrench on the left tine shaft and unscrew it like it was a normal bolt. It's in there tight and it will take some force. When I unscrewed mine, the left bearing seal retainer, left bearing seal, and left bearing all came out with it. I just needed to replace the seals. I went to the right side, and with a screw driver carefully pried out the retainer. Then it's easy to just pull out the right seal with your finger. Put a new right seal in and insert the right retainer. Make sure the retainer is facing the correct way. I used a block of wood to tap mine in once I had it positioned because I was afraid to hit the retainer with a hammer. Now I put the tine shaft back in while holding the worm gear with the vise grip. Screw the shaft as far as it will go by hand and then go the rest of the way with a pipe wrench. Now came the tricky part. The right bearing did not slide right in. There was some resistance. I had to use a 1/2" threaded pvc pipe (not sure it needs to be threaded but that's what worked for me) longer than the tine shaft that was sticking out. I slip the pipe over the shaft against the bearing and tapped with a hammer. This drove the bearing in all the way. It needs to go in far enough to leave room for the seal and retainer. The plastic pvc allowed for this. Now put the right seal in. If the outer edge of the seal is only flush with the housing you did not tap the bearing in far enough. I made this mistake on my first try and tried to force the retainer in. Take it from me. It won't work. You will end up ordering another retainer to replace the one you mangled. Once in properly I slid the retainer over the shaft and then put a washer over that to tap against. The block of wood doesn't work on this side because the shaft is in the way. I used my pvc pipe again to tap against the washer and, wala, it worked like a charm. I hope this helps someone. All the other posts really helped me. Thanks!
