SOURCE: 2 1/2 Briggs......doesn't run smoothly....surges at all speeds.

Hi, Check that you have the correct spark plug fitted or fit a new one as it sounds like your plug is getting hot then shorting out.
Sometimes the magnito can do this as well. but I would start with the plug.

Sounds like you will need to clean your carburetor.
Sometimes you can get by with priming it a few times, and letting it
run a few times like that and it will flush the gunk out of the jets,
but most of the time you will need to rebuild the carburetor.
If the mower is over a couple years old, then I also recommend that you
buy and install a new carburetor repair kit, because the diaphragm will
get hard and that will cause it to be hard to crank.
When you clean your carburetor and remove the jet screws, count the
number of turns it takes to seat the jets from their original position.
That way when you go to put the jets back in, you know how many turns
they were in/out.
Please do not forget to rate me, Thanks
Good Luck, I hope this helped

A champion cj 8 plug will work fine. As far as air filter it is probably a paper on, take the old one to a dealer or small engine repair shop and they can match it up for ya.

Briggs and stratton 650 series mower wont start. When I release the pull cord, it backfires. Removed and cleaned the carb, replaced spark plug and filter and fuel, still will not start

The timing pin is probably sheared off. Take the cowl off and you will see where a pin fits on the shaft. Replace that pin with a new one. This often happens if you have hit a rock or something similar.

3.5 hp Briggs & Stratton won't run unless I pour gas into carb

This sounds like a problem with the suction. If the air filter is clean then it will need new carb gaskets. There may also be an issue with the pressure being created by the engine.

Clean or change air filter. Clean, gap or change spark plug. Empty gas tank add fresh gas with Stabil. When spark plug is removed pull rope several times to blow out cylinder. Spray starter fluid in spark plug hole before replacing spark plug. Clean outside of carb so choke works freely. Spray starter fluid into carb breather hole with air filter removed and try to start. if running replace air filter and cover. If no start disassemble carb and clean. If no start replace carb.

Describe your Briggs Stratton Lawnmower Lawn Mower Short Block Problem. I have model# 11A-414E765 Lawn Mower. Starts ok but is surging and when I checked a brand new spark plug it was full of black dust...

I am pretty sure this is a 4.5 Hp engine with the carb on top of the tank. Plastic carb 4 or 5 mounting screws mating carb to tank. Remove the air cleaner... and tighten the carb to fuel tank mating screws. It is drawing air between the tank and the carb. This should stop the surging. If is has been a long period that you used the mower with the surging problem the diaphragm between the tank and the carb may be either out of position or damaged. The diaphragm is not expensive. Usually the first time this symptom presents itself you can resolve it by tightening the carb to tank scresw. IF you have the primer bulb carb..mash the rubber of the bulb against the carb body. If the surging stops... the primber bulb has a pin hole in it.

You passed the mower model number and not the engine model number. When we use the 11A number you passed all we get is the base and handle parts. If you need more help I need the model number off the engine just above the spark plug wire on the air shroud.

Thanks for choosing Fixya,
Kelly

Briggs & stratton 35 classic mower.(mcculloch m3540p) starts rarely and only 4 a short time. Shows spark at plug fuel getting through air filter ceaned.(tried without air filter to no avail.checked...

With the air cleaner removed, see if the engine will run for even a short time when you give a couple of quick squirts of starter fluid into the carb.
If it runs with that, the orifices inside the carb are dirty and need the gunk cleaned out.
Before extended storage, always drain/use up all the gas in the tank and run the engine til the carb runs out of gas.
