pull the flywheel and check if the key(latter models the flywheel itself will need replaced if stripped)is damaged. This is a possibility.

SOURCE: Craftsman 17.5 hp 42 in. Deck Lawn Tractor

This sounds too easy of a solution but I had a like ptroblem with my Craftsman. I loosed the gas cap a bit and the rough running and stalling stopped. he vent on the gas cap that contains a turn over interrupt valve was plugged causing the gas not to flow. I took the cap apart and cleaned out the vent hole though cleaning the holewith a paper clip would have worked as well. Anyway..it fixed my problem. I think my dirty hands of deris deposited the matera in the vent hole when filling with gas.

you carburator just needs to be cleaned/adjusted, and if your original fuel filter isnt clogged and looks clean, leave it, but the air filter is a good idea to change at least once a year (grass shavings covered filters dont help the engine much).

Craftsman LT1000 riding mower with 18hp B&S engine. Mower acts like the battery is almost dead. Will try to turn over but doesn't seem to have the power to cycle the engine. New battery, starter,...

There is a compression release device on the cam shaft to allow the engine to spin easier when starting. This is likely the culprit because the starter isn't strong enough to push the engine past full compression. The fix is to replace the cam shaft.

I have an old Craftsman 6.75 hp walk behind

Not sure where to look for the model number. But here's a few things to check.
1. If the gas is old (from last year), drain it out of the tank, carb and lines and replace with fresh. Gas can go bad and won't ignite properly after it has been around too long.
2. Replace the spark plug.... sometimes they look good and aren't.
3. Clean the Air filter. Take the filter element out of the housing and give it a good cleaning with compressed air. If it's plugged up with debris and dust, your trimmer won't run.
4. Make sure the oil level is correct. Many of the current motors won't run if the oil is low.
hope this help ya

Tractor starts then stop running

It will either be the stator that needs changing or the carb needs to be pulled off and cleaned

The starter bendix is not engaging properly the bendix pushes the starter gear into the flywheel gear when the starter spools up, it may need minor lubrication.
It sounds like the engine is not getting fuel as it should, the main jet may be restricted from varnish if she stumbles under a load especially if the plug tips are white after running for 1/2 an hour.
Remove the float bowl and clean the jet, make sure the fuel is still good, gas that smells like a library is more like varnish and less like fuel.
