It's a possibility that the regrigerator's conpressor is low on oil, this could cause the issue you're describing- being "loud" or "noisy". Being Low on Refrigerant can also cause this sometimes.

To directly answer your question, sure you can do something about this yourself as long as you're familiar with refrigeration systems, and have a set of gauges to check the refrigerant level, etc. The oil and refrigerant must be installed precisely and if you add to much(or too little) that'll be a problem.

Usually when a refrigerator gets noisy, especially if it's several years old, just replace it. Check your local Craigslist page as there are always deals to be found on there for nice, used appliances. You can call a local appliance shop, one that sells used ones, to see if they have a used one for you. Also, the Facebook Marketplace is a great source for stuff like this.

If you have a friend or family member, who works in the hvac Trade it couldn't hurt to ask them to come check it out for free or perhaps a minimal amount, you can try it but 99/100 times you'll end up buying a new refrigerator refrigerator. That's another good thing about Craigslist & FB Marketplace- the option to barter or trade is often available.

Another option if you’re not comfortable with a used one is to call the local stores that sell appliances, like Lowes, Home Depot, Best Buy, etc. and ask about a returned or blemished item, usually they include a full warranty identical to a new one at a much cheaper price!

My Refrigerator got loud a while back and I had another one the sane day for $50, it was on Craigslist!

SOURCE: Whirlpool top freezer refrigerator- compressor makes a loud noise

The compressor is that black casing you see at the bottom of your refrigerator - inside this sealed case is the motor assembly which stits on 3 or 4 springs that act like a cushion - you have a little gap at the bottom where the lubricating oil is present. Your springs have likely worn out and when the compressor shuts off the assembly is banging against the rigid casing make that loud "klonk" or bang noise. It IS normal for compressor to make some faint "tick-tick-tick...tick.....tick" when shutting off, but loud banging, bell sounds, etc, means the assembly is banging on the case from the inside - you can indeed live with the noise, your compressor will function normally, probably for months, or even years - it can also keep wearing out and one day the noise might get very loud (like a very high humming noise) - There is NOTHING that can be fixed, you either pay $400+ to change the compressor or buy a new refrigerator - If you DO replace a compressor usually the replacement will be noisier - Keep a thermostat inside your refrigerator at all time to make sure your compressor is still keeping your refrigerator and freezer cool.

Cat number ED25TEXHW00, side by side, Whirlpool Refrigerator. Neither fridg or freezer will cool. Lights turn on & condens fan runs. Compressor will not kick in. What to look for???

If the compressor will not kick on what you have is either a bad compressor or a bad starting device. Generally the unit will try and start and after 8 seconds or so you will hear a loud tick. That indicates the relay is bad. If the compressor is bad it will usually make a loud humming noise.

The start device is plugged into the side of the compressor. Unplug the frig. You can simply take off the wires to the start device (remember where they go!!!!!) and pull it off. You have two piece, the overload and the relay. The relay is the piece that is most likely the problem. Some machines will have these put together in a white plastic block. You can shake this entire piece and if you hear loud rattling it is broken. Sometimes the relay is visibly burned and blacked where it plugs into the compressor. Anyway, if you do not have this white plastic relay/overload combo, the relay is a brown square shaped plastic piece. Shake it and see if you hear rattling. If not, chances are very good the relay is ok, and the compressor is locked up.

Compressor changes are expensive and unless the frig is extremely nice and cost a pretty penny, they aren't worth fixing. Relays and overloads should not break $100 for the parts, and any tech should be able to change one in under 10 minutes. So if it's a relay fix that puppy! good luck :D

. Cut everything off for a few minutes then turn it back on and listen for a click from the compressor relay as the compressor tries to start.
Is the compressor motor running. If no check starter/overload relay.

Loud clanking & rattling when fan stops

I have ran into this many times in the past. I'm 99% sure of what it is but try this. Check the compressor mounts and make sure it's seated firmly on the rubber feet. It might have gotten out of place when you moved it. This is the 1% that it could be. Now for the 99%. What I'm 99% sure you have is a compressor that has either a weak spring or broken spring inside. But you in luck, there are more than one and it will run fine with one bad. You can find diagrams of the inside of these type compressors on the web. There is nothing you can do to fix this due to it being a factory sealed compressor. It will most likely run for a long time, it's just noisy.

My Whirlpool refrigerator makes a loud groaning cough noise when it turns off. Is it near the end?

the compressor is pushing a lot of pressure. when it shuts off sometimes the pressure forces the compressor to roll backwards and make a pressure release noise. I've known some to do that for years.
