Did you buy compatible toner cartridges? Perhaps one of them is defective and does not fit well.
Check where you put the cartridge in and verify nothing is bent. Also, make sure you are putting it in the correct direction.

SOURCE: Paper jam in HP 4255 office jet all in one printer

Clearing paper jams
Paper jams can be real or false. The unit may report a paper jam even when there is no jammed paper. The solution to a real paper jam or a false paper jam is the same.
CAUTION:
Jammed paper must be removed using the rear access door with the power cord disconnected to avoid mechanical damage. Do not remove jammed paper from the front of the unit.

  1. Turn off the HP product and turn it around so the back of the unit faces you.
  2. Disconnect the power cord from the back of the all-in-one. The power cord must be disconnected to allow the paper feed rollers to turn freely.
  3. Locate and open the rear access door by pressing in on the left side tab and then pulling the door toward you.
Figure 2: Removing the rear access door

  1. Inspect the pressure rollers on the rear access door and verify that they are clean and turn freely. Clean the rollers if needed with a soft towel lightly moistened with water. If the rollers do not turn freely, replace the rear access door. Click How to Buy on this page to order replacement parts.
  2. From the rear access door opening, remove the jammed paper.
  3. Remove the remaining paper from the paper supply tray. Discard any paper that is damaged or crumpled and then re-stack and reload the paper into the paper supply tray.
  4. Reinstall the rear access door.
  5. Reconnect the power cord to the unit and turn the unit on.
Preventing paper jams
The following information will help prevent paper jams from occurring:
  • Never use paper that is torn or wrinkled.
  • If you are having problems using paper that has already been printed on once (recycling), replace it with new paper.
  • Remove and then reinstall the rear access door. Verify that the access door is fully locked in place. The paper can skew if the rear access door is not locked.
  • Every six months to one year, clean the paper feed rollers with a rag lightly moistened with water. Over time the paper feed rollers accumulate dust and do not function as well as they once did.
  • When printing envelopes, tuck the flap into the envelope and crease the folds before printing.

SOURCE: Won't accept non-HP cartridge

You ask "Is this a common problem with non-HP cartridges? " It is a possiblity.
Where did you purchase the cartridges from?
This error might be caused by defective printhead or sensors

Are you removing the 2 protective caps from the cartridges?

Read this HP page:

SOURCE: hp 6500 office jet refill

to refill 920:

1. If you have the plastic cap that covers the 9 mm. hole where you can see the sponge, then tape this cap to the cartidge with scotch tape. If not, use some duct/masking tape to cover the round hole.

2. Use the dry hypodermic needle to find the hole that will be found at the very center of the 920 label. With the needle, pierce the label.

3. Fill the hypodermic needle with 4 cc of ink.

4. Insert the needle 2-3 cm. into the hole made in step 2. Draw out 1 cc of air, then slowly force the 4 cc of ink into the sponge. Use toilet tissue to absorb any ink that might have escaped.

5. Let the catridge stand overnight (if possible) so as to allow the ink to evenly saturate the sponge. If not, insert it into your printer immediately.

Note: If you are going to refill catridges, be certain not to allow the sponge to dry completely. Thus, you might want to do step one immediately and to enclose it in a sealed sandwich bag upon removing an empty catridge from your printer even if you are not going to fill it immediately.

SOURCE: hp office jet j5780 cartridge error: cartridge on right must be replaced

Switch off, Remove catridge and Clean any leakage in the printer.
Clean the catridge with saliva if u do not have any cleaning liquide. Put the catridges back switch on and you are there. My hardware officer just tried it this morning and it worked like magic.
Note make sure all leakages are removed.

Difference between hp 4630 printer and hp 4635

There really isn't any difference. Both 4630 and 4635 have same specs as far as connectivity, speed, ink cartridges, etc. You can compare the two at the link below. Hope this helps. Sometimes there is a variation of model numbers for same model for marketing reasons. For example Costco stores would order HP 4630 and that will be the Costco 4635. Hope that makes sense. if you are to lift the top part of your printer you will see the cartridges inside as shown below:

Lifting the scanner bed exposes the entire paper path and gives your hands plenty of space to replace ink or clear paper jams.
