Battery to charge newly filled, but only shows 5V - could this stop the charger from remaining on as it sees a "faulty" battery ? Thank you for your input!

Is your laptop is brand new? Try to remove the battery. Then, try using your laptop and AC adapter without the battery, you will get the power supply directily from AC adapter. If it works properly, then its okay. Now, try to install back your battery then try to charge it. If not charging, perhaps you need to buy a new battery. However, I suggest you bring your laptop to a service technician to further check the error, before you purchase a new battery.

I have seen this with faulty batteries.
Try changing the battery.
Also, check in the BIOS that the adapter you are using is recognised and shows a state of charging with the battery in.

You have a failing PMU on the motherboard it is like a sister bourd allowing the system to function nomatter what the situation this is fatal if not resolved i recommend a service center
