7. What Is An Electronic Flow Control (Smart Head) It is an electronic device that controls the start and stop of an electric pump. The smart head senses when there is a drop in pressure or when water stops flowing when you open and close a tap. If there is no water in the system the smart head also senses this and would not let the pump run dry, thus protecting the motor. For this reason a float switch is not required.

I can't seem to get a proper seal on the valve stem (Standard American) therefore cannot fill up the tire. Should the pump arm be in a particular position?

The locking lever on the pump should stick out when you're pumping, and lie flat against the body of the pump when it's released.

If that doesn't work, try tightening the nut on the head of your pump - if it's too loose or too tight, the rubber will not seal properly against the valve stem. Also make sure the head is firmly seated against the valve (press it in firmly) before flipping the locking lever up.

It looks like you have the SmartHead on this pump. If not, make sure two parts inside the head (one plastic, one rubber) are flipped the right way. If it's set for a Presta valve and you're trying to inflate a Schrader, or vice versa, it will leak (or it simply won't fit). If you have the SmartHead, you don't need to worry about this step, it automatically adapts.
