There are many models of WA Ophthamoscopes...
The PanOptic for example has a variable Diopter Adjustment
to make it focus according to each person eyesight
Is it possible that your model has a Diopter adjustment and it is set for someone with really poor vision?

BTW: It is Ophthal not Opthal
