How to fit a Bearing in a Washing Machine | Appliance Repair Help

• If a washing machine is rumbling, and very noisy on spin, the main suspect is the drum bearings. Drum bearing failure is common on many washing machines due to water getting into them if the drum bearing seal fails. (Hotpoint and Zanussi in particular in my experience) To check for drum bearing failure you can take the belt off and spin the drum by hand. If the drum rumbles when spun then the bearings may have gone. There should be a constant rumble all the time the drum is revolving.
• Another drum bearing failure symptom is excessive up and down play in the drum which can be checked for by lifting the drum up and down from the drum lip behind the door seal. A further symptom of drum bearing failure can be a brown rust patch underneath the washing machine and down the back of the outer drum, underneath the drum pulley (where the belt goes) although this patch is not always present. There are usually two small holes at the back of the drum bearings where water that has got past the drum bearing seal trickles out, and it's usually stained with grease and rust if water has got into the bearings.
• Loud noises when turning the drum by hand can also be caused if the drum itself splits, or the spider at the back of the drum has come away from the drum, is corroded or even broken. This would normally be a loud noise on each revolution of the drum whereas the noise when drum bearings have gone is constant all the time the drum is turning. Lifting the drum checking for excessive play can often reveal a broken or loose drum spider which sometimes only occurs at certain points round the drum (the spider has three arms and is bolted to the drum at three points)

Time to really order a new drum and really replace with a new one.
Resetting the drum unit will not improve print quality. It only resets your drum and allows you to continue to print. You decide when to replace the drum unit not the manufacturer!

1.Remove the drum unit and toner cartridge. Wait 1 or 2 minutes.
2.Replace the drum unit and toner cartridge into printer.
3.The error message "Change Drum Soon/Drum end soon" will continue to appear if the drum counter was not reset when you replace the drum unit.
4.To clear this error message, you need to reset the drum counter as instructed below.
5.Make sure that the machine is turned on.
6.Press Options.
To confirm you are installing a new drum, press 1.
7.When the LCD shows Accepted, close the front cover.
8.Your drum is now reset.

The information set forth below is the approach used in our shop.

There is a high probability that one of the conditions set forth below is causing your drum to bind as you try to remove it. The simplest solution is to use your brake spoon develop the maximum amount of spacing between the brake shoe and the drum.

If that doesn't work, on occasion we've had to use a chisel or a cutting torch to remove the drum. It is very seldom that such drastic measures must be taken but it has happened.

Surface/Heat Checks/Cracked Drum/Out-Of-Round Drum Brake drums act as a heat sink. They absorb heat and dissipate it into the air. As drums wear from normal use or are machined, their cooling surface area is reduced and their operating temperatures increase. Structural strength also reduces. This leads to overdistortion, which causes some of the drum conditions covered here.

Scored Drum Surface
A scored drum surface shows a scored drum surface. The most common cause of this condition is buildup of brake dust and dirt between the brake lining and drum. A glazed brake lining, hardened by high heat or in some cases by very hard inferior grade brake lining, can also groove the drum surface. Excessive lining wear that exposes the rivet head or shoe steel will score the drum surface. If the grooves are not too deep, the drum can be turned.

Bell-mouthed drum shows a distortion due to extreme heat and braking pressure. It occurs mostly on wide drums and is caused by poor support at the outside of the drum. Full drum-to-lining contact cannot be achieved and fading can be expected. Drums must be turned.

Concave Drum
A concave drum exhibits an excessive wear pattern in the center area of the drum brake surface. Extreme braking pressure can distort the shoe platform so braking pressure is concentrated at the center of the drum.

Convex Drum
A convex drum exhibits excessive wear at the closed end of the drum. It is the result of excessive heat or an oversized drum, which allows the open end of the drum to distort.

Hard Spots On The Drum
This condition in the cast-iron surface, sometimes called chisel spots or islands of steel, results from a change in metallurgy caused by braking heat. Chatter, pulling, rapid wear, hard pedal, and noise occur. These spots can be removed by grinding. However, only the raised surfaces are removed, and they can reappear when heat is applied. The drum must be replaced.

Threaded Drum Surface
An extremely sharp or chipped tool bit or a lathe that turns too fast can result in a threaded drum surface. This condition can cause a snapping sound during brake application as the shoes ride outward on the thread, then snap back. To avoid this, recondition drums using a rounded tool and proper lathe speed. Check the edge of the drum surface around the mounting flange side for tool marks indicating a previous rebore. If the drum has been rebored, it might have worn too thin for use. Check the diameter.

Heat Checks
Heat checks are visible, unlike hard spots that do not appear until the machining of the drum. Extreme operating temperatures are the major cause. The drum might also show a bluish/gold tint, which is a sign of high temperatures. Hardened carbide lathe bits or special grinding attachments are available through lathe manufacturers to service these conditions. Excessive damage by heat checks or hard spots requires drum replacement.

Cracked Drum
Cracks in the cast-iron drum are caused by excessive stress. They can be anywhere but usually are in the vicinity of the bolt circle or at the outside of the flange. Fine cracks in the drums are often hard to see and, unfortunately, often do not show up until after machining. Nevertheless, should any cracks appear, no matter how small, the drum must be replaced.

Out-Of-Round Drum
Drums with eccentric distortion might appear fine to the eye but can cause pulling, grabbing, and pedal vibration or pulsation. An out-of-round or egg-shaped condition is often caused by heating and cooling during normal brake operation. Out-of-round drums can be detected before the drum is removed by adjusting the brake to a light drag and feeling the rotation of the drum by hand. After removing the drum, gauge it to determine the amount of eccentric distortion. Drums with this defect should be machined or replaced.
Measure the inside diameter of the drum in several spots to determine out-of-roundness.

An out of round or tapered drum prevents accurate brake shoe adjustment prevents not only difficult removal but also can cause excessive wear of other brake parts; excessive tire wear; and, a pulsating brake pedal.

• The Drum LED blinks if the drum unit is near the end of its life. Use the drum unit until you have a print quality problem, then replace the drum unit with a new one.

• The Drum LED continues to blink if the drum counter was not reset when you replaced the drum. To reset the drum follow the instructions below:

1. Open the front cover of the printer.

1. Press and hold down Go button for about 4 seconds until al the LEDs light up. Once all 4 LEDs are lit, release the Go button.

1. Close the front cover.

Caution

Reset the drum counter only when you replaced the drum unit with a new one.

Did you mean drum frame unit ? This frame include all the spare parts of drum unit except drum and drum fixing plate. The code number is AR 310 DU ( DRUM FRAME UNIT ).

1-6-4 Image formation section (1) Detaching and refitting the image formation unit Follow the procedure below to replace or check the image formation unit. Prucedure 1. Pull the drawer out and open the front cover, bypass tray and paper conveying unit. 2. Remove the waste toner tank and toner container. 3. Remove the two screws holding the waste toner tank cover and then the cover. 4. Remove the screw holding the developing retainer and then the retainer.
5. Remove the two screws and datach the connector and remove the image formation unit.
(3) Detaching and refitting the drum Follow the procedure below to replace the drum. Cautions: • Avoid direct sunlight or strong light when detaching and fitting the drum. • When removing the drum, spread paper underneath as there is a possibility of toner spill. Toner spill can be reduced by inserting an approximately 20-mm thick pad under the image formation unit toward the developing section and removing the drum with the unit slightly tilted. • Hold the drum at the ends and never touch the drum surface. • After removing the drum, keep it in the drum case or storage bag to protect the surface from light. Prucedure 1. Remove the image formation unit (see page 1-6-27). 2. Remove the main charger unit (see page 1-6- 28). 3. Remove the four screw and blade spring, and then open the cleaning unit. • Slide the cleaning blade back and forth and insert an approximately 4 to 4.5-mm thick spacer between the retainer at the rear of the cleaning unit and the housing.
4. Remove the screw holding the drum grounding plate and then the plate. 5. Remove the E ring from the drum shaft.
6. Remove the screw holding the upper developing seal and then the seal. Figure 7. Pull the drum shaft out and remove the drum. • Detach the drum horizontally. 8. Replace the drum and refit all the removed parts. • When replacing the drum, insert a sheet of paper between the drum and developing roller to prevent damage to the drum. • Check the letter indicating the drum type printed on the new drum flange. • Securely insert the drum shaft as far as it will go. When turning the drum shaft, turn it in the direction indicated by the arrow marked on the image formation unit frame. • Rotate the drum in its rotational direction and check that the cleaning blade does not flip up. 9. After replacing the drum, run maintenance items below. • U109 “Setting the drum type “ (set to the drum type printed on the new drum flange) • U110 “Checking/clearing the drum count”(clear the drum count) • U111 “Checking/clearing the drum drive time” (clear the value)

J2 is the indication that the Drum Cartridge life has elapsed. The possibly exists that the Customer has installed a New Drum Cartridge. The Customer would be directed to change their Drum Cartridge by their User Guide. This action on the part of the Customer will cause the Drum Reset Switch to actuate for a moment when the Side Door is closed. This is with the provision that the Drum Reset Circuit is working properly. That momentary actuation of the Drum Reset Switch, being actuated by the New Drum, resets the Drum Counter. Should something be faulty with either the reset mechanism on the New Drum Cartridge, or the Drum Cartridge reset Switch circuit, the Counter will not reset. Note: A new Drum Cartridge will NOT reset the Drum Counter unless the machine is holding a J2 presenton the display. The first revolution of the Drum will render the Drum Cartridge used. A Used Drum Cartridge will NOT be capable of resetting a J2. Again, one revolution of a new Drum Cartridge will render it to be a used Drum . Cause:
