Hi, the problem you could be having could be down to one or more problems, first of all i would get hold of a little tool that cleans the track doing this ensures you have good connection as over time grime builds up on the track and it loses it shine and the connection gets weaker, also the trains wheels may need cleaning as well these pick up the same grime and it stops the connection, you could clean the track with some real fine glass/sand paper and you can also use this on the trains metal wheels, now the next few problems are a bit more technical and will require some knowledge of how the train works as taking it apart is not easy and their are many small parts that will need removing and cleaning and and putting back together.
so if you have never done this before then its best if you take it to your nearest model shop and get them to give it a good clean for you.
so i would clean the track first and the wheels also make sure the track is joined correctly and pushed together far enough.
now to clean the inside of the train this will require the casing taking off and this then lets you get to the contacts that touch the wheels its this contact that needs cleaning so this is the part thats difficult to get off and back on, it may also need replacing. this piece of metal is rubbing on the wheels all the time, its like a small metal strip that sits on the bars that spins the wheels now over time this bar gets weaker and dont keep a strong connection it may also need cleaning and or replacing. now all trains come apart different and the wheels will fall out of you get it wrong and this is where the problems can start, so i would go with the cleaning first and see what happens ok
plus if the cleaning makes no difference and if you need to get someone to do it for you then ask them to check the motor for you as these ware really quick and the bushes inside the motors over heat and this causes the exact problem you are having ok so bare that in mind when getting the work done.
all the parts needed can be bought from most hobby train shops and some majoy hobby shops so any parts you may need are easy enough to get.
let me know how you get on or if you need further assistance ok
