I have a Elna Supermatice sewing machine from 1962. I need a power cord that fits into the machine on the right side and has 3 prongs. It is a # 722010 model.

SOURCE: My "new" elna type 722010 only sews in reverse.

What is the stitch length lever set to (4 in the diagram below)? these models have a lever that slides from positive to negative (ie) reverse, so you need to set it to the positive area, between 2 and 3 above zero. If you move it below zero then it sews that stitch length backwards.

If this machine is new to you, you might want to join the yahoo group called "Elna Heirlooms" there is lots of helpful members who share info on these old machines there.

SOURCE: Where to get a user manual for Elna Supermatic

Hi Beverly,
My suggestion is that you join up the Yahoo group called "Elna Heirlooms" you'll find lots of very helpful fellow supermatic owners there and probably what you are looking for too. Here is one page from the manual for threading the bobbin into tension, once you've mastered this on the Elnas, its the same for all the Swiss ones.
10_14_2011_9_57_45_pm.jpg

Yes, top threading is important, you need to get the thread into the tension discs and also the take up lever. Have you cleaned out the tension discs too? these do get gummed up with fibres and dye particles sometimes. Just turn tension down to zero and "floss" between discs with the selvage edge of a clean piece of waste cotton fabric.

Might see you over on Yahoo, several of the members there are really knowledgeable on these great machines.
cheers

How to set up

  • Remove your Janome sewing machine from the box, placing the main machine on a hard surface appropriate for sewing and the accessories and smaller items to the side. Unwrap all of the wrapped items. Remove the tape used to protect the machine during shipment. Set aside the power cord and foot pedal.

  • 2

Attach the power cord to the machine. The power cord plug-in area is located on the lower right side of all Janome sewing machines and has a series of metal prongs and a power switch. Fit the female end of the power cord onto the metal prongs and push it gently until it no longer moves.

  • 3

Attach the foot pedal to the machine. The foot pedal plug-in is also located on the lower right side of all Janome machines, right next to the power cord plug-in. Press the foot pedal plug-in into place gently until it no longer moves.

  • 4

Turn the power switch on. The power switch is located in the same area as the foot pedal and power cord plug-ins and is a rectangular black switch. Press this button. The sewing machine light will turn on.

  • 5

Place a spool of thread on the spool pin, located on the upper right top side of the sewing machine. Place the thread so that the thread unwinds in a counterclockwise motion, with the thread coming off the back of the spool.

  • 6

Insert a needle into your machine. Consult your owner's manual for the appropriate size and type of needle. Turn the needle clamp screw, located above the needle area, toward you to loosen it. Turn the needle so that the flat part of the upper shaft area faces the rear and slide the shaft of the needle up and into the needle area. Turn the needle clamp screw away from you to tighten the needle and lock it into place.

  • 7

Wind the bobbin and insert the bobbin into the bobbin case. This procedure may vary depending on the model of your Janome machine, so consult your owner's manual for specific instructions.

  • 8

Thread your machine according to the directions in your owner's manual. Like the bobbin, this procedure can vary widely depending on the model of your Janome machine.

  • 9

Set your tension, located on the front of the machine, to halfway between three and four. The tension may be a dial or it may be computerized and located on the LCD screen, depending on your model. Consult your owner's manual to find out how to set the tension.

  • 10

Place a piece of scrap fabric in the machine and sew a test seam before you start to work on a project to make sure all of your settings are correct.

I have been iven an Elna 2005 machine but it doesnt have a foot pedal/power cord and obviously I need one if I am to use it. Where can I find the best priced one? I also need the instructions.

Hi there,
you can download an instruction manual for your machine from this link
http://www.arizonaexpressionz.com/elna_instruction_manuals/2003-2005-2007_instruction_Manual_En.pdf
This manual covers three models - the 2003, 2005 and 2007, just read carefully when looking at specific functions - the manual will state which models differnet functions apply to.

To obtain a new foot control and power cord:

Firstly check that the machine is the same voltage as the power supply for the country you are in. Check plate on the right side, usually near the power inlet plug. This will state model, serial number and voltage. Make a note of these details.

Then go to this page http://www.elna.com/?country=246
and choose your country, then go to the page "contact us" and ring Elna head office in your country. They should be able to give you a price and availability on the foot control and power lead or direct you to a local dealer who can sell you these items.

There is also several good sewing parts and info websites:
www.sewingpartsonline.com and www.sewusa.com for USA
and www.sewingparts.co.uk for UK
however I can't see the items you require on these sites so best to contact Elna direct. However, you may find other accessories such as bobbins for sale on one of these sites.

I trust that this assists you: 4 thumbs up please if so. All the best with getting to know your 2005.
cheers

Where can I find a power cord for this machine elna contessa 400

If it is the machine in the picture - it is a Janome based elna - I'd go to one of those sites. Janome power cord is also interchangable.

Elna supermatic...the light comes on ,,but nothing else works

Turn the machine on, press the foot control down and turn the handwheel backwards. If it sputters, the motor carbon brushes are worn to the springs and need replacing.

Next, while pressing on the foot control, try wiggling the wires around where it enters to machine and where it enters the foot control. There may be a short in the cord. If the short is at the machine, you need a new cord. If it is at the foot control, the cord can be pulled into the foot control, the shorted part cut off and the connection reattached.

If it still doesn't work, try removing the cord from the machine and placing an alligator clip test lead to two of the inlet prongs on plugging it into power. Which two prongs you ask? Try several combinations, (one will light up the lamp) CAREFUL: THE MACHINE MAY SUDDENLY TAKE OFF AT FULL SPEED, SO REMOVE THE BOBBIN, THE THREAD AND NEEDLE FIRST. if it runs, it is your foot control. If it doesn't run, it's likely the motor brushes or motor.

Light dims when you sew

the problem is that the cord that was replaced on it is too light for the sewing machine. some companies sell cords that are made with 18awg wire 18awg wire can only deliver enough electricity to run the motor sapping up all of the power from the light as soon as you push the pedal. you need to get a cord made by singer or rewire your cords with 16awg wire... 16awg wire is the standard wire for all vintage singer sewing machines it keeps the light nice and bright...... hope this helps

Bobbin casing for elna 8000

There is one small metal piece 3/4 inch long and shaped like the letter "T" that fits under the right hand needle plate snap one screw. Attach to underneath square nut and can be seen sticking out from the top holding the bobbincase in place after the top plate is replaced and everything is back together. If this is not it, a picture would help as I have repair 100's of Elna 5000 to 9000's.
