Hello, Jerry -

I doubt the kind of thread and pre-wound bobbins you use with your Janome MB4 sewing machine are the problem with the thread tangles and loops on the bottom and top of the items you are working on are the problem. Robinson Anton threads appear to be rated as high quality.

I suspect the problems are caused by the tensions for the top and bottom threads and / or how the bobbin is inserted in the bobbin holder. It is an embroidery sewing machine, is it not?

From the user manual for your model of machine:
https://www.janome.com/siteassets/support/manuals/embroidery-models/inst-book-mb-4en.pdf
on Page 81 (PDF image 84), the problem of the thread looping (last Troubleshooting issue on the page) may be caused by
- Needle thread tension too loose
- Bobbin not inserted properly
- Poor quality thread used (Note: I don't think that is the issue for you.)

I found a series of YouTube videos about the Janome MB4 machine, which may prove instructive. This is the link to the Part 1 video:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8VL-ikUr3tQ
In the right sidebar of that page, you will see links to the first parts of the video series. As you choose subsequent parts of the video series, you will see additional links to other parts of the video series in the right sidebar.

I also found a longer video tutorial on YouTube for the Janome MB4:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X_RJ8-kY5_o
The sections of the video on inserting the bobbin (starting at about minute 14:18) and threading the machine (starting at about minute 15:17) may be helpful.

If, after making sure you know how to insert the bobbin properly in the machine and after threading the machine properly and setting the tension for each needle, you still experience thread nesting, I suggest you locate a nearby authorized Janome sewing machine service center and pay to have the machine evaluated and adjusted so that it works properly.

Best wishes.

SOURCE: Designer 1 Embroidery Bobbin problem

Designer 1 bobbin case tension adjustment:
When the bobbin runs out, sometimes it bends the bobbin case tension spring. Then tension is too light. Take the bobbin case out of the machine. Tie the loose bobbin thread to the Designer 1 needle plate. Insert the bobbin in the bobbin case. Here’s the tricky part set the bobbin case on the table as if it’s in the machine (Bobbin is visible and sitting horizontal to table top) threaded as if sewing and loose end tied to needle plate (that is removed from the machine). Lift the bobbin case off the table rotate it so that the flat side of the bobbin are vertical to the table and no longer horizontal. Have the bobbin case oriented so that the thread coming out of the bobbin case sprint (slot area where it is put for sewing) is at the top. Lift it high enough that the needle plate is lifted from the table. It should not release thread unless you shake it gently and then a very small amount of thread. The needle plate is the exact weight resistance your bobbin case should have on the thread.

SOURCE: Top thread stitches correctly but bottom thread loops.

FYI---- Loops on the bottom-- problem is in the threading..
Loops on the top--- problem is with the bobbin.

SOURCE: I am getting bird nests under my embroidery hoop.

Anytime I have had it happen it was because my machine wasn't properly threaded. The first place you run the thread through it has to click into place in two places. If it misses one it will birdnest.

SOURCE: the bobbin thread is bird nesting on my viking

Make sure the bobbin is extended out of the bobbin case via the tension spring mechanism in the bobbin case. This provides tension for the bobbin unit. Check to make sure the upper thread has not "jumped out" of the take-up lever so that when the needle first touches the fabric the thread is still taunt and when the needle enters the fabric a small loop is formed right above the fabric and the eye of the needle. If these tips do not help suggest that you take it to an authorized husqvarna viking dealer for service. Check that it is threaded correctly (both top and bottom) making sure that the upper thread is in the takeup lever and the bobbin is guided through the tension spring in the bobbin case. Watch the needle as you slowly turn the handwheel counter clockwise (toward you) and the needle point touches the fabric (make sure presser foot is down). Is the thread still relatively taunt? If it is loose, the upper thread tension unit does not have enough tension. Check the areas where the thread goes and make sure you remove any loose threads or fluff which could be inhibiting the tension discs from closing over the thread. If the tension unit still is not tightening enough, the tension unit may need to be replaced or the circuit board replaced. If everything is ok in the upper thread area, now look at the bobbin area. With no fabric, watch as the needle enters the bobbin area. Does it go down and the upper thread catch the bobbin thread and pulls it to the surface? Check for anything preventing the bobbin thread from being pulled up to the surface through the needle plate. If you have still not been able to resolve the problem suggest you take it to an authorized husqvarna viking dealer for service. You can locate a dealer near you by visiting the husqvarna viking website and clicking on the Dealer link on the left-hand side of the page - http://www.husqvarnaviking.com

Good luck.

My janome mb4--how do you stop bird nesting on the back side and looping on top!!!

This is a tension issue with the top thread and also the bobbin. There should be adjustments for it on both parts.

The stitches on the underside are looping I’ve retreaded both the needle and bobbin and neither makes a difference

You are getting a thread mess under the fabric? Frequently, this occurs because the top thread is not fully seated in the tension disk.

Install a brand new needle.
Remove the top thread from the machine.
ALWAYS RAISE the presser foot and rethread the machine from the beginning.
If necessary, adjust the top tension so the top and bobbin threads meet in the middle of the fabric.

Tension on sewing machine

Check your stitch sample. The looping under the fabric is most likely the top thread. If so, this is call bird nesting or thread nesting. Most common cause is the top thread is not completely seated in the tension disk.

Remove the top thread from the machine.
ALWAYS RAISE the presser foot and rethread the top thread.
Set the top tension at the midway point (this can be tweaked later).

Test your stitch. Increase or decrease the top tension until the top & bobbin threads meet in the middle of your fabric.

I am a new sewer have a Brither BM-2600 what numbers on the dial do I have for just plain stitching I have tried lots of combinations but the cotton underneath is all bunching up and not sewing right

I am not sure as to your machine, are you saying a "brother" machine? If your tension is set, say on 6 and it is too tight, turn the dial one more number......to a 7 or to a five and then check again. Also, I would rethread the machine and also take the bobbin out and then put it back into the machine. A lot of times, the bobbin isn't threaded into the machine correctly and it bunches up. Also, you can't use certain thick thread on some machines.

Bobbin thread is gathering up under Neath

Sounds like birds nest or thread nests. HINT: When threading the top thread, ALWAYS have the presser foot in the RAISED position.

When I sew I have thread bunching up underneath the fabric, I've changed needle size, thread, bobbins and cleaned out around the bobbin holder. I'm frustrated and out of ideas.

Susan--
Easy peasy, once you know the problem and how to fix it. It's called "bird nesting" or "thread nesting" or what I refer to as thread "barfs."

Install a brand new needle.
Remove all the thread from the machine.
**ALWAYS RAISE** the presser foot and rethread the top thread.
Verify the top thread path is correct.
Install and thread the bobbin case, make sure it is correct.
Set the top tension to the midway point.

Now retest your machine. Birds nests gone? You may need to tweak the top tension because the factory standard changes due to age and use.

FWIW, problems appearing under the fabric are an issue of the top thread. Thread problems appearing on top of the fabric is a bobbin issue.

My bobbin isn't sewing correctly

If the bobbin stitches look out of whack, your machine is probably threaded incorrectly. rethread with the presser foot up and see if this fixes the problem.
