Watersnake T18 trolling motor stopped working

Hello. My watersnake T18 trolling motor stopped working and I have no idea how to fix it. It's not the battery nor the leads but that's all I know. Any hints of what is wrong and how I can fix it please

Most likely cause of failure is water got into the motor.

I have a Watersnake T24 motor that would not work after one year. I checked the switches and found that the forward-off- backward switch was defective. Sometimes the sudden increase in current could melt the inside components in that switch which I discovered after opening it. My T24 uses a 30 amp switch and it was very difficult to find that replacement switch in Canada. I eventually found one in AliExpress with a 30 amp rating. It takes about 2 months to have it shipped here from China. With the T18 model you should be able to find one easily with a 20 amp rating.

SOURCE: new MotorGuide VariMAX trolling motor does not run

The motor should work without the circuit breaker for a test. The breaker is a safety device to protect the motor and wires if something malfunctions.

SOURCE: we have boat that came with trolling motor, boat

My guess is the motor has leaked water into the lower motor assy (behind the prop). and needs to be cleaned up and the brushes replaced.
here's a schematic:
Edge 40
You can try this to check for water leakage:-
1) disconnect from power supply
2) remove the prop
3) you will see 2 bolt heads behind where the prop was. Remove ONLY ONE of them for now.
4) if you see the bolt (it's about 8" long) is covered in what looks to be blask, oily/watery or rusty condition then you know that you'll need to overhaul it.
5) if it IS the motor assy, remove the other bolt and disassemble everything noting their location.
6) I would recommend replacing the brushes Part# 188-052 and the seal kit 2883460.

I bought a 6 dollar watersnake pos from wal mart of course it wasnt even close to fitting my old sevylor 12v. So I said wtf it I drilled out a 1 inch hole in that then filed off the old blades on old prop to the hub which was intact. I then used the old hub and cotter pin with liquid metal gobbed inside slid the new watersnake over top and centered and set it. The first problem is the blades are much bigger but wtf am I gonna do. To be continued. Haven't tried it yet..But the concept is sound. I used a paper ring to hold in the liq metal from leaking out while setting and can access cotter pin to boot!! I could file down and reshape blades as well if I find they are to big. But that might be unintelligent. Well more unintelligent than my other unintelligent idea. This is American ingenuity at it's best.!!!

Hello, You have several points to check. #1 check your wiring connections--- plug, plug socket, wiring connections internal of trolling motor, condition of wiring to battery, battery terminal connection & charge of battery. #2 borrow someones DVM (digital multimeter) and check the resistance of the speed control as you turn it without any wires connected to it. #3 if problem not found take 2 aspirin and E-mail me of test results "for further review".
