of the published hard power reset fails and told here 10000 times.
fails. (hold power button for 30 seconds release
then with big battery no 13 years old and shorted out
push again that button for 30 seconds
no battery no ac pack.
then release,button.
ac pack only now ,no big bad battery
push the button again.
hear fan ,feel it blow if not stop fan dead is 1st order failure
clean fan paths.
last is the screen, most PCs this old (all) have dead CCFL back lamp
so power on hear fan, point flash light at screen
see data in dim room bingo bad CCLF
posted 100s of times bad CCFL here.
it has no value this PC this old,l find 2010 or newer and fix that.
When you start it from being turned off do you get anything on the screen at all? IF the answer is no, is there any sound of fans starting or beeps? This will tell you if the issue is most likely the display or the motherboard.
never seen one 15 year old PC not packed in lint. unless museum piece.
we run first what that old battery there.
and the COIN cells are not 15 years life

turn on pc enter bios setup select default settings save and restart.have os disk in drive wait for screen display any key to start from cd.press any key to load disk.in options select install windows ( not repair) your system will find existing os ,now you can choose repair or install fresh copy.if you choose to install fresh copy delete partition first and create new partition and format.

Boot up while pressing F2 until you hear a beep. Press F9 until you hear a beep. Press <Enter> until you hear a beep. Press <ESC> 2 times. Press <Enter> 2 times. This should reset the bios. Good Luck.

You will have to navigate this site; enter 'notebook', 'Aspire', and scroll to 5100; after that, you will have to choose 32 bit or 64 bit. That being said, Acer does not support Windows 7 yet-you can try the Vista drivers; more often than not they will work. One note-I cannot tell just from the info you supplied whether you have the Atheros or Broadcom chip-You should be able to determine that in Device Manager.
