Last time I played a tape it pulled lots of it out of the reel. I switched it on it made a high pitched noise and then three "thunk" noises and then none of the buttons worked. I want to try and fix it but am wondering if anyone has any thoughts on what the problem is.
Does this have the funtion Auto shut off at the end of tape? Clean broken tape out of the mechanism, the auto shut off is stuck in off position.
That unit was made in the 1970s. There are going to be lots of things that are wrong just due to age. There are pinch rollers on the capstan, there are belts and pulleys and the rubber on these is most likey degraded and lost. There are electronic parts called capacitors that have dried out and are now bad. i admire your willingness to work on this unit but it is going to be hard to get parts for it.

This could be a head fault? Another possibilty is the preamp stage. You will need to look for something that would take out both channels. Such as an IC.

The problem, according to messages on your site, is that the belts are old and have stretched. There is a great step by step tutorial on www.Instructables.com with pictures and all. Parts are not too hard to find on search engine. Looks like less than $25 to fix.

you can not fix it without tearing it apart. if you do take it apart, try to get the front panel off. Hit the eject button and look for a lever that is stuck.
SOURCE: I have a Sony Stereo Cassette Deck
you need to open it manually.take out the cover of the player by removing the screw.after removing the cover you can now access the deck mechanism.manually push the pin that serves as lock that holds the cassette door gently push it down to free the door.because the decks do not move check the belts for the mechanism make sure the belt is not loosen or worn out and cut off.replace it with a new one if you found it deffective.
make sure also that there is power on the deck motor you can use a tester to measure the voltage on the circuit good luck!
