My Sony tc 127 tape deck will power on but none of the functions work.

Last time I played a tape it pulled lots of it out of the reel. I switched it on it made a high pitched noise and then three "thunk" noises and then none of the buttons worked. I want to try and fix it but am wondering if anyone has any thoughts on what the problem is.

That unit was made in the 1970s. There are going to be lots of things that are wrong just due to age. There are pinch rollers on the capstan, there are belts and pulleys and the rubber on these is most likey degraded and lost. There are electronic parts called capacitors that have dried out and are now bad. i admire your willingness to work on this unit but it is going to be hard to get parts for it.

SOURCE: akai gx-625 reel to reel tape deck has no sound

This could be a head fault? Another possibilty is the preamp stage. You will need to look for something that would take out both channels. Such as an IC.

SOURCE: Sony tc-wr535 won't eject. Tape stuck. Won't play

The problem, according to messages on your site, is that the belts are old and have stretched. There is a great step by step tutorial on www.Instructables.com with pictures and all. Parts are not too hard to find on search engine. Looks like less than $25 to fix.

SOURCE: Sony TC WR565 dual tape deck. Both doors will not

you can not fix it without tearing it apart. if you do take it apart, try to get the front panel off. Hit the eject button and look for a lever that is stuck.

SOURCE: I have a Sony Stereo Cassette Deck

you need to open it manually.take out the cover of the player by removing the screw.after removing the cover you can now access the deck mechanism.manually push the pin that serves as lock that holds the cassette door gently push it down to free the door.because the decks do not move check the belts for the mechanism make sure the belt is not loosen or worn out and cut off.replace it with a new one if you found it deffective.

make sure also that there is power on the deck motor you can use a tester to measure the voltage on the circuit good luck!

Is there an internal speed adjustment to fix tape speed selector that has no affect on tape speed. This is on Sony TC-440 reel to reel.

There is a cam with solidified grease on a lot of Sony Mechanisms. The deck need to be cleaned of the grease they used that solidifies and then a better grease such as Lubriplate 105 should be applied.
The Idlers need to be reconditioned as well. The Sony units can be labor intensive due to this required work but I do fix them when people want them done. I am in the Chicago area as Skywave Tape Deck Repair

My sony tapecorder tc-330 vu meter shows only one side working with the needle fluctuating, what causes that?

I have had that in a TC-366, the diode and a capacitor were the reason but you will need Technician tools, meters ans a soldering station to get the unit fixed. Sometimes the meter movement gets
knocked out due to abuse or shock. Does it move at any time as when you turn on the deck?

Why does my sony reel to reel tape deck make no sound when playing a tape?

Are you playing the tape "right-side up"? I used to screw that up a lot at my radio station.

Tape Transport issue

FF and Rewind are functions of the reels, not the capstans. If the reels fail to rotate in response to capstan-driven tape motion the unit will assume a broken tape or end of tape. I think you have a mechanical reel drive system failure. Take it to a shop for evaluation and correction.

Slow tape speed on reel to reel tape deck

My TC-230 has the same problems and it is mechanical. Actually, its real hard to say what your problem is, but it is most likely the pinch roller is to tight on the piece that is connected to the motor. This extra tension is from a spring inside the machine and, when in storage for a long time with the machine set to stop, extra pressure builds up on this spring. Try leaving it unplugged on fast forward/play overnight. that might help.

Repairing or replacing old tape decks

Hi m522posner

There is a surprising interest in "vintage" hifi products these days. Your tape machines probably needs new belts. Check this site out. You can get spares for your tape machine here. Belt kits are $17. He does repairs also, but the transport to and from may be an issue for you. I suggest emailing Bob, he may be able to refer you to someone in CA > I could do the repairs, but I am in Australia. :)

You could have a go at freshening up the belts yourself:)
