Either there is a short or your motor is going bad drawing too many amps. Las but not least you have a weak breaker.

SOURCE: Compressor will not start

It is a good sign that the motor turns freely with and without air. That indicates that you have good bearings and that the intank check valve is in good condition. Next you should check the capacitors and the condition of the windings. Some motors have start and run capacitors and others only have run cap. Remove from the circuit and test with meter having cap. test setting. Most shops will test them for free. The cap should test within 95% of stated ( uf ) value. Replace as needed. Finally check that the flyball switch at rear inside of motor is functioning correctly. At rest, switch is at start winding, then a split second after start, it shifts to run winding. Check contacts are not stuck and that switch is working and lastly that the winding are the color of new penny. Good luck.

SOURCE: Electric Air compressor just hums then trips breaker.

usally there is a releaf valve that takes the pressure off the compressor while it is resting. If that pressure is not off when the drive piston starts the motor will overload and blow the the breaker or reset. Check for a releaf valve for when the unit has reached full pressure

SOURCE: Air compressor won't build pressure

If this unit has what appears to be a pipe with fins on it , you may have a ruptured inter-cooler which will be leaking where you stated.

SOURCE: compressor starts innitially, then when pressure

the start capacitor on the motor body is weak, the motor needs this component to over come the air pressure when cycling to re-build the low air pressure, change both the start and run capacitors when doing the start because the other run capacitor is just as old and it will soon fail

SOURCE: I have a PUMA air compressor that has been running

If you remove the fan belt and the motor runs without a load,

one of your motor capacitors is bad. some motors take one

capacitor, some take two. the capacitor is what helps the

the motor give that extra torque to run the compressor pump.

good luck!

Sears troubleshooting

Sounds like motor is frozen; it happens. Most likely its bad brushes and/or commutator. It will be cheaper to buy new motor or compressor.

How do I wire my puma 220v sigle phase air compressor with s-p40t motor starter?

You contactor /motor starter has connection for up to three phase /L1 thru L3. You will be only using L1 and L2 connectors for power-in/ line and using meter find cross connector for connecting load / motor (usually white and black or red from the motor). The contactor has a push button to test your work (use meter to test before actually wiring up motor and line). The contactor is controlled by separate switch (usually pressure switch on the compressor) using proper voltage as required by magnetic switch of s-p40t. Good luck

Breaker trips when you try to start compressor motor spins a little before tripping breaker

Just fixed my compressor. It would start ok when the tank was empty but trip the breaker if it tried to start with pressure. Searched and read about weak caps, or problem with check valve or pressure switch leaving pressure in the pump head, etc. Turned out that the black plastic box which holds the 2 start up caps and is attached to the end of the motor with 2 screws had cracked on the bottom. The black box had tilted out enough that the start up caps switch was not engaging. Pushed on the lower part of the box and it started perfectly. Fixed it for the cost of some 2 part epoxy. Maybe not your fail, but definitely worth checking out first.

The Electric motor does not have enough torque to start compressor. It is hooked up to 230V with 40 amp single phase. checked voltage with meter so I know it has enough voltage.

Does it trip the breaker or does the motor just hum and not turn the compressor? The motor may need a start capacitor. Do not keep tryin to start you can burn out the start winding on the motor.
TURN OFF POWER AND LOCK OUT.... try and take the belts off (if it has belts)of the motor and compressor and make sure both turn freely. IF THEY TURN FREELY THERE IS A PROBLEM WITH THE MOTOR. You said voltage, wire size and breakers are the right size.
Hope this helps you with your problem...Jim...please leave a comment

How do I wire my 60 gal 3 hp IR commpressor? What size wire, what size breakers, and where on the motor do I attach my wires. Motor says 15 amp, 220 volt. Thanks, Clint

I would use a # 10 wire size with a 30 amp breaker. The motor should already wired to the pressure switch unless it has a mag starter. If no mag starter incoming power should go to pressure switch not motor. If unit has a mag starter incoming power should go to top of mag starter.

Craftsman 1 HP 8 gal vertical compressor.919

Sounds like the unloader valve is not working properly. The unloader typically is at the end of a tube going to the pressure switch. The unloader is tripped when the pressure switch cuts off. The purpose of the unloader is to bleed the pressure from the cylinder when the compressor cuts off so the next time the compressor cuts on it will be starting in an unloaded condition.
when the compressor cuts off you should hear a discharge of air for about 3 to 5 seconds if the switch is working properly. The unloader can be adjusted if necessary by loosening the jam nuts and adjusting the unloader towards the lever on the pressure switch.
