SOURCE: Motor Hums,No Run

Inside the back case on the motor you'll see a white piece with two copper colored arms that have two silver points that almost touch. If these are rusty I've found that the motor won't turn over
. A quick fix is to take some 600+ grit Aluiminum oxide sandpaper and give each of those contact points a brisk sanding to remove any oxidation. This will help the points make a positive contact . Make sure while very obvious that the motor is unplugged first.

I have a Speck Pump, model E71, only a year old. It suddenly stopped working - it was fine at the start of the season. The problem is that it just hums when turned on.

Since it hums it has power. I believe there is a start capacitor on it, that or the start switch may have failed.

Hi have a waterco supastream 150 pool pump. When turned on it makes a humming noise doesnt pump, but if you switch it on and off a few times it fires up. What could be the problem? Regards Nicky

Will either be the start capacitor (in the box on top of the motor) or something binding the impeller or potentially both.

There is a fan cowling on the rear end of the pump try this;
- Turn the power off
- Remove the cowling
- See if the fan allows you to spin freely/easily the pump
BE SURE nothing could become entangled in the fan
- Turn pump back on
- If it starts, probably something on the impeller side
- If it doesn't but will start with a little turn of the fan probably the capacitor. Get a new one from Jaycar or RS components

Remember to put the cowling back on safely.

When I turned my pump off to backwash and then turned it back on it made a humming noise then stopped running. Now it is doing nothing. what could the problem be?

sounds like a bad start capacitor, or there is something (rock, sand, or some debris) caught in the impeller.

The start capacitor not working will cause your motor to hum, then it will overheat and trip the high limit. It won't attempt to come back on until it has cooled. It's a common problem.

try clearing the impeller first, if that doesn't work and the motor shaft spins freely, then it's a capacitor.

I have a speck 90 series pump with a broken impeller how do i remove the impeller off the shaft

You'll need to remove the back plate off the motor. Take a pair of channel locks and hold onto the bolt that goes through the motor. With your other hand, unscrew the impeller off the shaft.

Trying to replace a 4hp motor on a speck pump but can't remove the impeller, also, how is the seal plate attached? I've worked on several 3/4 to 3 hp pool pumps but this one is a first!

Id be happy to help if you could tell me what model speck pump you are working on.
There is just not enough information here.
Once you have the model, you can contact me @: [email protected] for further assistance. I will give you the website for all the speck manuals incase you need it as well.

Pump runs 3 mins turns off

Sounds like the pump is overheating and tripping the high limit. If it reaches a certain temperature, the motor will shut down to save itself. This is usually from inadequate line voltage or possibly a bad run capacitor or a problem with the windings. This can also be caused by running the wrong size impeller. If you have a one horsepower motor, you can only run a 1hp impeller or smaller, never bigger. So if you've had work done on this pump recently, make sure the impeller is not rated for more than the motor can handle. So, first check for good voltage, then check the capacitors for "bloating" or leakage, and check that the impeller is properly sized. I may have missed something, I write again if I think of any other reasons...

Unit not pumping on wash cycle

Could be bad main wash pump motor, bad capacitor on said motor, or broken or jamed pump impeller. You will need to remove the lower spray arm and filter assembly to get access to the pump impeller to see if it is jammed or broken. If you can turn the motor shaft but the motor just hums then the motor of motor start capacitor is gone. You can order the motor with start capacitor and impeller for around $130. Check for 120v at the motor terminals prior to replacing motor/pump assembly to confirm, 120v at motor would but motor not turning equals bad motor and or capacitor.
