On dryers with the old mechanical timers you can turn the knob in either direction without harming the mechanism. On either type, even electronically controlled models with a problem like you described, there are a lot of possibilities. After confirming you have power to the appliance check the thermal safety fuse located on the heater housing.

I believe there is a capacitor on your motor(7-10 MFD) I would replace this and then ensure that the drum is reversing properly. It is usually just a short 2 to 3 turns, and the "normal" direction is much longer. This is done via a small motorized unit, usually called a "MOTOR TIMER", and the contacts inside it can get a bit burned an pitted if running for a while with a deteriorated start capacitor. If the motor and drum seem OK, but it does not reverse, you might need to change that unit. More expensive dryers might have a timer relay for this, or an electronic timer activating the relay.I hope this helped Tim

The heating element uses the most power. Was the home wired by a licensed election ( the dryer plug)? if it was it should have #8 or #10 wire depending on the load. the breaker is sized to the wire (so don't change it). you may have a clogged vent pipe. this will reduce air flow and make the dryer work harder possibly tripping the breaker. You should probably start by making sure you vent is clear and free from debris, debris in the vent could cause a fire.
