Try different brand discs by asking friends for a free blank and if nothing works, then the machine has a problem probably like the programmers forgot to turn on that function and should be returned to store.

SOURCE: Did you ever receive firmware update for your Panasonic DVD Recorder?

Yes, they sent me the firmware update, but the dvd recorder couldn't even read that. So I've never done anything further for it. I've just been using my old dvd player. I figured they would tell me they couldn't do anything else and to get it fixed myself.

SOURCE: Panasonic DMR-E80H DVD recorder no

The one thing that will alway fail on these as well as any laser read piece of equipment is the laser reader. I would check into that to start and don't look into the laser. The parts are available and it is a matter of your experience with electronics as to how easy this will be for you to replace.

Firmware update for Magnavoc VCR/DVD recorder ???

The Magnavox support site only offers support for devices no older than 2008. And, ANY firmware update is specific to the model which you have not posted. Can you imagine the chaos that would ensue if you tried to update it with the wrong firmware? So, you may LOOK at the firmware listing I include but NOT use it unless it is for your model. That ought not stop you from searching the site for firmware for you model nor doing a google search for your model plus "firmware update" and so forth. AND the manual tells you how to perform updates, something to follow. That may mean you have to search for the manual which also will require the model number. https://drivers.softpedia.com/get/DVD-BluRay-Media-Players/Magnavox/Magnavox-MDR865H-DVD-Recorder-Firmware-10014.shtml
ZDNet also has a lot of drivers.

I can't record with my DVD player on 1x-16x DVDs

This unit is too old and too basic to handle 16x speed. However, there is a firmware update for this model DVD/VCR to record on 8x.

All you have to do is call the toll-free number in your manual and request it. They will send you an update disc.

Here is the basic procedure after you receive the update disc:

1. Turn on your TV and your combo unit. The tray should be closed. The unit must be in DVD mode.

2. Quickly press the sequence CM Skip, 6, 5, 4 (This will switch it into firmware update mode. The tray will eject automatically.)

3. Insert the disc and push the tray back in.

4. The update will begin. It will take approx. 2-3 minutes. It will tell you when it is complete and eject the tray.

5. When it is done, remove the disc, but DO NOT close the tray. It will go back in later. Turn the power off.

6. Wait a few minutes and when the tray goes back in wait about another 10 seconds and then you may turn the unit back on.

Firmware update procedure is now completed.

I have set up the gdvd303rw as per the book, but the options from Erase/Format Disc on the Record/Disc setup screen are ghosted out. This is the case when I have a blank DVD R in the machine.

Try different brand discs by asking friends for a free blank and if nothing works, then the machine has a problem probably like the programmers forgot to turn on that function and should be returned to store.

SAMSUNG DVD R120 error EC:0207

I had exactly the same problem -- error message of "This disc can be neither played nor recorded. Please check the disk [EC:0207]" after the machine had been working fine for a year. I downloaded the latest firmware from the Samsung website, burned it to a CD-R disk (took three tries until the DVD Recorder recognized the disk -- worked when I used Rocio CD Creater software), then loaded the firmware updates to the DVD Recorder. On the Samsung website you can retrive the firmware update instructions as well. I had to perform the firmware upgrade several times until it successfully updated both the system firmware as well as the disk firmware. After successfully updating both, the Recorder now recognizes the DVD-R disks and I was able to resume recording. I have however, noted some choppiness with the playback of the newly recorded disks. Other than that, the firmware upgrade successfully resolved the problem.
