SOURCE: How do I thread the film through an 8mm B&H Projector

http://www.folkstreams.net/vafp/stream.php?id=97

It's about four and a half minutes long, and shows how to clean the various components that need cleaning beforehand as well as how to thread the projector.

However, I wish you good bloody luck on finding a bulb, if you don't have one that still works. From the look of the unit, it uses a DAR bulb, which was delisted (read: went out of production) thirty years ago. You can sometimes find new old-stock (NOS) DAR bulbs on eBay, but expect to pay $30 to $35 apiece plus shipping for them.

SOURCE: I have an old Bell & Howell projector and I

These guys obviously have something to sell. PLEASE DON'T THROW YOUR MOVIE PROJECTORS AWAY. DVD-R has a useful life of about 5 years at best.

To answer the question posted: As the bulb ages, the extreme heat causes a bulge in the glass and that's why the bulb won't slide down. The only option is to tap the top of the bulb with a screwdriver (or similar instrument) and shatter it--then unscrew the housing and let the mess fall out. Be sure to protect yourself from shards! Once you clean up the mess you can install a new bulb (DAR, I believe).

Once you see the rich gradations color of real film (even 50 year old film), you'll be hooked!

Bell & Howell Cube Slide Projector Gear, New Item condition: New Quantity: More than 10 available Price: US $15.00 Approximately C $15.54 Buy It NowBuy It Now
This is the gear that goes bad on Bell and Howell cube type slide projectors. If you have one of these projectors you can pretty much expect the gear in your machine to go bad. The original gears were made out of an inferior material that was too soft. New old stock gears would be made of the same material and although they have never been used they most likely will fail right away since they are made of the same inferior materal. They were made soft to reduce the mechanical noise when the gear runs. This was told to me by the person who designed them at Bell & Howell. These new replacement gears are made out of Delrin, an excellent material for gears. Delrin is sometimes used to make gears that are normally made of metal. Don’t miss your opportunity to finally fix that old projector or get a spare gear for your working machine while they are available.
Detailed installation instructions will be included with every gear.

SOURCE: I have a Bell & Howell slide cube projector

I occassionaly experience the same problem. I don't know why it occurs, however; here's what I do to get the projector moving again: 1) Face the right side of the projector wherein the lens will be pointing to your right. on the middle top of the projector edge closest to you you will see a top access tab. 2) Move and hold the tab to the left and lift open the top of the projector. 3) On the edge of the rotating tray at about the 5:00 position (my guess as I'm not at the projector now) you will slot in the circular plate aligned with another slot on the fixed casing. Inside this sloted area there is a metal pieve that spans the slot across the two surfaces. 3) Take a screw driver and giggle this metal peice, pressing dow and releasing, and / or in and out, while pressing the slide advance advance forward and back. I found no ryhme or reason to this or that it readilly works after so many jiggles, however; it alsways does usually after anywherefrom a few seconds to a minute or two. This isn't a fix but a temporary workaround. I'm in the process of sulling my thousands of slide to be digitized, after which I will no longer need this wonderful legacy machine. Hope this helps. Regards,

Change a bulb

Hi Janet,

Put on rubber gloves.
Hold bulb and push down and turn counter clockwise to remove bulb.

Maybe hard to remove, try spraying WD-40 first. MAKE SURE AC CORD(power cord) is disconnected. Wait a few hours and try to remove the bulb.
