SOURCE: Singer Featherweight tension assembly

Putting this back together is a thirty second job if you have done it a hundred times. If you have never done it but have mechanical aptitude, it may be a challenge.

Whatever you do, don't bend the check spring out of shape!

Below is a link to the Singer site with the schematic for reassembly. When placing the check spring back in place, place it in about the 6 o'clock position with no tension so that it has a fair amount of check before pulling it up in place..

When setting the tension, at a setting of "1" the tension disks should just be slightly compressing the beehive spring. "0" is almost no tension at all. Normal sewing is 5.

Get all of the parts together and push in the cup with the numbers while screwing on the knurled nut taking care to get the pin in one of the holes.

I have a serial number for a Antique Singer Sewing Machine set in table. I can't seem to locate it and don't know the current value of this particular item

You really need to locate the serial number for your machine.

Valuation is really based on a lot of items--working condition, visual condition, accessories included, item's location, and most of all, how much someone is actually willing to pay. Vintage Singer sewing machines are common since so many of them were made. However, there are some models that are more coveted than others, ie Featherweight.

Need model # of singer ak684446

Google "Singer Featherweight" and look at the photos. The featherweight is quite distinctive looking.

All models of Singers with serial numbers AK-057821 to AK-705475 we made in 1951

Serial numbers lookup

If it is a singer that model was made in 1948. The serial number says that the machine is a very desirable "Featherweight" model 221.

To make sure that it is a Singer Featherweight check to see if it has a fold up bed extension. Also there "221 or 221A" should be on the side in on a small brass plate.

If it is in fair condition it could be worth $200 to $400. The price depends on color and condition but even 221's in poor condition are very saleable.
Good Luck

@ptd..I just received a singer featherweight as a gift I have the serial number and want to know when it was made I know I can find out from the serial number but, I don't know what site to look at for...

Go to www.singer.com . Click on your country. When the Singer page comes up, type "serial number" in the search box. You'll be taken to a page that will guide you through finding your serial number and the production year.
Have fun. The site is fascinating.

I have a singer featherweight, Serial number AL409402, I'm trying to find out if this is a model 221 by the serial number, can you tell me if it is?

Singer has on their web site with a database of their serial numbers. Since you have the serial number to your machine, it will be easy to find out.
Hope this helps.
