You may wish to microwave the bird seed to kill any larvae and eggs.

What kind of foods should I feed a parrot?

You can feed a parrot a mixture of pellet food and human food. The pellet food should represent up to 80% of their diets. Other foods you can feed them include leafy green vegetables, certain breads/cereals, small amounts of protein like boiled chicken and fruits. Try not to feed your parrot any dairy products.

If I want to put out a treat for the wild birds in my garden, is it different to the stuff I would give my pet parrot?

Although there is some overlap, the food you give your pet bird may not be exactly the same as the food eaten by birds in the wild. Here is a link to a recipe for a wild bird treat on the National Geographic site, so you can be sure it's appropriate for wild birds.

Peanuts area great nutritional source for birds. Smaller birds wont manage to eat them butmany other varieties will. You can leave them whole in their shells or mix theminto bird seed or suet.
