Sounds like a drain hose or pressure switch hose is loose. Is the water leaking visible on floor?
Testimonial: "They water is quite visible almost immediately yet some water does make it to the tub. What water does make it to the tub drains when shutting the machine off. This is a top loader and quite old."

check for kinks in the pipe or restrictions to the flow in the pipes before it gets to the washer, if all is ok then check the filter on the outside of the water connector on the machine for dirt
if you confirm all is clear and the flow of water is not the problem before the machine, replace the cold water solenoid

it's prabably your pump it has two metal strips that snap on from the motor to the pump un-snap them and undo your hoses and get yourself a new pump

Tip the washer onto the front and you will be able to see through the bottom to look for leaks.

It's quite possible. First see the Sears parts list for your washer with diagrams of all major parts.

Then see the Whirlpool / Kenmore Service manual for these washers and check the troubleshooting section.

If your TOP LOADING Whirlpool manufactured washer (Kenmore) is leaking, the following link explains how to remove the exterior washer case in order to accurately inspect the washer interior components for the source of your leak:

If the leak is more like a constant drip, a common source of leaks with Whirlpool manufactured top loaders is a leaking drain pump. These pumps are not serviceable and if damaged, must be replaced. The following link explains how:

Don't forget to check all drain hose connections under the washer and the center tub seal.

Only now do I see that! Thank you!
In addition to the comment posted in the "testimonial", I have extremely limited work space when It comes to removing the entire cabinet. Or the back panel for that manner!
SO, in an effort to avoid any unnecessary disassembly it was decided to simply prepare for a flood by sandbagging...(lol, JK) LAYING TOWELS AROUND THE PERIMETER, and being sure TO UNPLUG THE BEAST!! Make it a quick assessment to dump a semi small amount of water into the basket to see if the river flowed unassisted. Judging by the quick water flow to the floor and the sound that went with it, it just seemed logical as you suggested, that it was either a detached or cracked hose, or a huge hole "somewhere since I am unfamiliar with the schematics or actual way these things function. Needless to say IT GUSHED in MILLISECONDS of adding the water to the basket as if bypassing any designs meant to slow or contain the flow...
After tilting the machine on its side...to continue for an answer, It was quickly diagnosed as A HUGE HOLE in the bottom of the plastic outer tub that surrounds the outside of the basket. It was actually one of the plastic fins on the outer side bottom that must have been weighted down and contacted the metal spring frame thinging from an overload of stuff. That would be my guess...who really knows, she's gone,,,ssniff
21 gun salute to a beast of a workhorse that lasted 35 years plus! We'll miss 'er. Lesson learned...DON'T OVERLOAD!! Cause you don't know what you got til it's gone!
Thank you for your thoughts AND THIS SERVICE! It motivated me to investigate and hope this post can assist others in similar situations. MAY
