The TV is not receiving a video signal. It is probably the cable you are connecting the tv to the source. If you are using an adapter, don't. Buy a proper cable.
The input signal is missing and the blue screen background comes on the screen. Change the input to some other device which you are sure works and see.
First when tapping changes the picture you have somewhere a bad connection; in electrical board or wiring. When the screen goes blank after a while means some capacitor is bad/old.

I'm willing to bet it's the main board. Its the board that all the video and audio inputs. What is the model number I could find the part for you. You could change it out yourself, Its not that hard. Let me know.
There are two places to look for the problems, the backlight inverter board and the power supply. Look at the power supply first since it is easier to get to, look for burnt parts, bad capacitors, etc. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Capacitor_plague Please post back what you find.
