We didn't take a picture before we undid everything and now we can't get the old chime to work at all
If all 4 wires are coming from 1 cable not 2 separate cables, chances are 2 wires are spares. (1cable 4 wires 4 colors) if so check at door bell chime for colors connected. Touch those 2 colors together at button location if doorbell rings that's the 2 wires you need. If you have 2 separate cables with 2 wires in each cable, touch the 2wires from 1 cable together if doorbell rings that's the wires you need
See if there is sufficient voltage between the two wires using a voltmeter. Also check that there is voltage coming out of the doorbell transformer to the wires, and power from the regular AC line going into the transformer. Sometimes the transformer dies and it's time for a new doorbell, although in the old setups, the transformer was separate from the doorbell.

"sometimes out the blue it will chime"
if for example the doorbell runs on 2.4Ghz signal and then you have a wireless phone which is also on the same frequency, everytime you use the phone the doorbell will ring. got it?
SOURCE: my pushbutton doorbell activates my neighbor's chime
in the chime box and remote you can change the setting for the remote signal that is picked up( refer to your manual for the correct settings) these will be a set of pin connections in the chime box and in the remote switch that will have to be set to another selection
SOURCE: my doorbell also ring neighbor's bell
Change pin configuration on plugin bell and the remote.
The pin configuration should match

it sounds like you have a bad push button . if the wires where crossed you would most likely have this problem as soon as you turned on power .
