First off, Carol, does 4502 mean anything to you ? If not, then disregard. The +/- refers to driver depth, which will be your power. If going to deep, turn to the - sign, not enough, + sign. Hope this helps you. If you know 4502, let me know what it is, you might know me.

Yes, the + and - adjusts the depth of the staple. You should check the setting periodically as it has a tendency to move as you handle the stapler.
Also, holding the nose of the staple flush and steady on the surface helps to drive them to the proper depth.
