GPD1448100M41 is a dual-fuel unit, but all we want to use is the heat-pump since we don't have the gas hooked up yet. We have the Ritetemp Thermostat/HVAC unit wired: O (orange) -> O | R (red) -> RH | C (blue) -> C | W1 (white) -> W1 | W2 (brown) -> W2 | G (green) -> G | Y (yellow) -> Y Thermostat Jumpers: 1=ON | 2=ON | 3A=ON | 3B=OFF | 4=ON | 5=OFF When I turn the unit on a/c or heat it tries to fire up the gas. I tried to disconnect W2 and the heat starts using the heat pump, but goes off after a few minutes even though the thermostat is still blinking heat. Same thing happens when I disconnect W2. UPDATE: At the thermostat, it looks like if I disconnect W1 and set jumper 1=OFF the heat comes on and stays on!
The problem with this: A heat pump is only designed to operate properly when the temps aren't lower than 45 degrees outside. That's why they have "emergency heat". The reason being, the heat pump absorbs heat from the outside and then sends that heat to the indoor unit, this releasing that heat inside. Most newer units switch automatically, and thus no rewiring necessary. Older units have a switch on the thermostat that allows you to manually switch to emergency heat when the outdoor temps fall outside of the systems designed operating temps. So, rewiring would probably not solve your problem if you live in a colder winter climate. Hope this answers your question.

What color wire is connected to the "Y" terminal on the thermostat.
If the unit you are connecting is a heat pump A/C unit the orange wire is for the heating mode. Normally the "Y" terminal on the thermostat. "R" terminal on the thermostat is the power to the thermostat, "W" terminal is for heating, "Y" is for cooling, and "G" terminal is for fan operation. At the condensing unit for cooling the brown and yellow wires would normally be for the cooling.

is this a heat pump or straight cool with heat strips?

The Vision Pro is a great t-stat and I have installed many of them with great results. I am wondering though if it is set up correctly. Did you go in and make sure that it is set for heat pump and for 2 stage heating? Look on the instructions how to get into the advance installer options. Go through that meanu and make sure that everything ig set correctly for your type of heating system and that it is set for 2 stage heating. From what you have here and I can tell the wiring should be okay that is why I think that it is in the t-stat programming.

The old thermostat has a second stage heat which is W2. The new one doesn't have second stage heat.
The wiring your describing on the old thermostat is telling me you have a heat pump with second stage heat and the new thermostat is for air conditioning only. You will need to get a thermostat for a heat pump.
