Darken the room. Very dark. Turn tv on. Press menu button. Get flashlight and shine at screen. If you can make out the menu barely. It's the back light gone. Is it plasma or lcd.
If your laptop appears to boot up and the hard disk LED flashes, then the problem is probably a back light fault. This can be a faulty inverter or a faulty CCFL lamp. If you can see characters when shining a torch on the dark screen then the screen is OK it is the lamp or ballast that has failed. I would find an authorised repairer and get it repaired. Hope that helps.
Cells phones have a LCD screen the had a back light, When the back light goes bad 9 times out of ten you can take a flash light and shine it on the display and can see the image, if so you know you got a bad backlight
issue with these phnes as well is you gotta replace the lcd as the backlight comes with them most of the time.

Most likely the display backlight fuse is blown. You will have to give it to a local repair shop or Canon service center. They will give you the price.
