Feeding hummingbirds is becoming a fulltime job, and I need to stop. I put out 10 feeders every year and have tons of birds. How do Istop now that they come back every year and depend on me?

Birds will instinctively know when to fly south, however you are correct in assuming that they may stick around longer if a food source is provided. This could be dangerous for some species of birds. The general rule of thumb for your area is that whenever the highest temperature of the day is less than 60 degrees Fahrenheit you should take down the bird feeder.

If it were feeding too fast, there'd be gaps between lines. I suspect it's slipping and not feeding. In that case, the gear that's turned by a lever is missing teeth, the lever is rounded, or the spring that holds the lever down against the gear is missing. All speculation on my part.. I didn't look the item up to see if it works that way.

How old can a hummingbird be?

Most species live, on average 5 years or so. It does of course depend on several environmental factors like food sources and weather. Some can live a couple of years longer or more and some only live 3 or 4 years.
