Martial Arts - I have had 8 knee surgeries over my 58 years. I am very interested in taking martial arts for health, strength, and self-defense. What types of martial arts would be good for me?

Legs are weak. I am able to walk with no problem. However, I am terrified I can make my legs worse with the wrong martial arts. Just need some input as to which ones I should look at. Would appreciate honest answers.

Try starting out with a clear mind, a fit body, and repetitive practice over time. Combined this makes one hell of a weapon.

I would like to learn martial arts

Then you need self defense training not karate. Karate is martial art art being the key word here, it's useful for self-defense but often is more of a hobby, way of keeping fit.
you don't want a jogging buddy to help you prepare for a marathon.
Most karate styles will be thought for months before you'll be allowed to fight, sparring will not provide you with real life situations that you may want to protect yourself in and you'll not be able to aim to cause harm, to another student wearing single layer of thick cotton.
