It is a break barrel air rifle that when it is cocked the piston is pushed back drawing air into the cylinder so that when the barrel is closed the breach seal covers the transfer port squeeze the trigger piston flies forward forcing the air through the transfer port into the barrel accelerating the pellet up the barrel and towards the point of impact
It is not a co2 powered air weapon

SOURCE: Hello, i have a Crosman 760 Pumpmaster Air Rifle,

Sounds like it has a bad o-ring. you can take it apart and replace the o ring for under a dollar. just make sure you look at how it goes back together when you take it apart they are very simple. just make sure the carefully take the right side cover off with the left side of the rifle laying on a table, everything should stay assembled this way so you can look at it. the part you are looking for is in the large chamber that the pump goes into. from the back (the side opposite the pump) remove the spring and the metal piece behind it, then use something the shove the big brass part out of the chamber and the o ring is on the big brass part . take the old o ring to a hardware store to get another one.

The rubber O ring needs to be replaced. You might have a plastic one though. Still needs to be replaced.

Air leaks out when installing co2

The Phantom Break-Barrel does not use CO2. It is a spring-loaded break-barrel weapon. If you really do have a CO2 gun, check the rubber seal around the outside of the cartridge puncture needle.

I have a crOsman model 1077 that wont take a CO2

Probably not by you, but by the shop, maybe. It sounds like the needle was bent and lost it's seal. Crosman has repair stations, if they don't fix it, they will send you another one. I have sent them guns before and got brand new ones instead of the old piece of junk I sent them for repair. They also bought out Sheridan/ Benjamin line of Air rifles, And they repair all those too. I sent them an ancient rifle, an old Benjamin Franklin,17 cal. bare bones stock and barrel only, they sent me back a total refurbish, welded, painted, new .22 cal.barrel, all new guts, unbelievable. I think the total cost was $35 on that one. They wanted $15 for paint, I told them I didn't want it painted, they said, OK, Get a hold of them. Hope this helps.

After inserting and compressing the CO2 cartridge, the CO2 leaks

You need to check the rubber o-ring seals both in the plug and there could be another up in the gun where the cartridge end meets the inside. If you have a broken o-ring you should be able to find one that fits at your local hardware store or store that sells air rifles. Hope this helps.
