Does it run after you get to the optimal humidity level?
If so, it's a bad humidity sensor switch A cheap fix is to put it on a timer. Otherwise replace the switch.
If the humidity switch were bad, the whole unit would keep running, in particular the fan. But the issue described here is that only the compressor starts without the fan starting (which leads to overheating and damage to the compressor), and that only the compressor stays on when the fan stops after reaching the humidity level.

this unit is very simular to an air conditioner except it has a humidistat instead of a thermistat.. if your handy with a continuity tester unplug the unit find the humidistat and check to see if its open or if its good then call the company at 1 800 322 3848 or contact the web site at [email protected] Good Luck

Mine leaks. Had leaked at other times but i took the vacuum cleaner to the front drain spout, that leaks into the removable basin. That worked in the past, but i't's not working now . The water is overflowing at the back of the catch tray and leaking out through the bottom underneath. The holes are clear, so it shouldn't be doing this. I am stumped.

if comp and fans running your out of freon or the compressor is not pumping more than likely out of freon and that means theres a leak in the sealed system high cost repair

Either you have some sort of leak and there is no freon pressure or..Your compressor wont turn on because of a swith or control isn't telling it to..Does the fan still blow?
So I just had this happen with my Frigidaire fad704dwd dehumidifier. I went to basement and heard it running and sounded off. The compressor was running fan was off which is bad and humidity said 30. I then pushed the off button and it stayed running. I was able to fix it. To make long story short it was a bad ground. I took the plastic back, sides, and front off. There was a green ground (main ground) and Green/yellow ground (fan ground) on the front coil with a bunch of rust. Removed the grounds connected them both together and cleaned the surface area and used a new stainless screw nut and screw to remount the wires to evaporator coil. Everything started working fine after that and I put it back together. Good Luck

Great! Thank you! Mine just started doing the exact same thing!
Same for me - will try your fix this weekend!
Dustin - this worked! Thank you.
This is certainly an issue with a stuck compressor relay - any "remedy" of cleaning corroded ground contacts is purely coincidental like the infamous black cat. Most likely people shook the relay loose in the process of trying stuff out, or merely shook it enough during the (dis-)assembly.
I was highly skeptical that this would work, but it did!!! I didn't see any obvious corrosion, but after sanding/filing the contacts and screwing them back on nice and tight it worked.
