I'm not planning on having pet rats just a curiosity question
From owning white rats (the type used in labs) as a child, I started with one fat female. Quite soon she popped several babies. Once these got older, their mating made the population grow exponentially, prompting my parents to ban them altogether, took to pet-store. The oldest male never killed any females, but used to drop new-born pups from the wardrobe top onto my bedroom floor, killing them, as I presume they weren't his offspring.
The female matriach, "Tessa", was very affectionate and snuggly, like a smooth-haired hamster with a long tail. :)
Yes a rat nest can ahve at least a dozen or so in the family.
