Hi Dennis,

It could also be the Hard Disk Drive. One thing I found is , DUST can cause any PC to shut down or cause burning scents. Open the cover and if you see lots of dust build-up, use a vacuum or those compressed air-dusters (also known as canned air or compressed air,) is a product used for cleaning electronic equipment and other sensitive devices . The dust is usually the # 1 cause of any computer failing to boot up, as there is no ventilation on those fans inside.

Second could be the Hard Disk Drive. You may have to replace it if you hear any clicking or a message appears on the screen (Operating System Not found) or the computer doesn't boot up into windows. Hope this helps

SOURCE: eMachine T2824 does not turn on

There are just too many eMachine models to be familiar with every one, however, as a preliminary inspection, remove the side panel, and turn the computer on to see if you see a green "Health" light. This will give you an initial clue as to how to pursue the problem. eMachines have historically had power supply problems. If you do not see a green health light on the motherboard, then your power supply is defective. A power supply supplies various voltages + - 5V, + - 12V ,etc. A power supply can be easily tested by a local shop with the proper test equipment. You might start there if you are a DIY! Short of that, you can purchase a power supply for under $65.00.

SOURCE: Emachines problem... PSU works but comp doesnt turn on

Hi, I don't want to tell you a color because it could be different than the actual. Look at the front of the computer and trace the wire that goes to the switch and follow it to the mother board. If you have a volt meter you could measure the voltage on the mother board pins. The mother board should also have silk screening that says start or on. On the case there should be a drawing of the mother board you can look there as well. I have another critical question. Do you have a green light on the motherboard? If you do have a green light, you can try wiring the pins together that the switch is wired to. (I do not have a drawing of this mother board so I can't tell you that there are three or two pins) if you cannot start the computer when wiring the pins together than you can try reseting the cmos or replace the onboard battery, emachines have a bad reputation for dieing. If you do not have a green light it maybe gone. The case will accept another ATX motherboard if that is the situation. You can go and buy another motherboard. To save yourself heartache make sure you can reuse your memory and hard drive type IDE (ata) VS Sata. You can go on a real learning experience by not paying close attention to all of your connector types.

SOURCE: emachines wont boot

Could be a cmos battery, try changing it. Sometimes that works.

SOURCE: old emachine T2642 will not

It sounds like a dead motherboard. Try removing the CMOS(BIOS) battery and replacing it. Then try removing and replacing the CPU as well. If you get the same result then you might be looking at replacing the motherboard.

SOURCE: Emachine W2047 No BIOS Start Screen

You can test the power button. Remove the wires from the power on pins on the motherboard. Momentarily jump the two pins with a small screwdriver. If the computer starts the power button is bad. If it still doesn't start then something else is wrong. Did you test the memory? Also do all of the fans work, especially the CPU fan? It can't hurt to test with the other PSU. You know the HDD is good. Test one piece of hardware at a time and hopefully you will find the problem.

T5020 emachine seems to have dead power supply- how can I confirm?

If the PSU fans only work for a short time usually this means that the PSU is shot

If you suspect your power supply has gone bad, there are a few basic things you can do to test it. First, plug the computer in and try to start up the computer. If the computer can start up or shows signs of having power (the hard drives spin up, or the fans turn on) the power supply might be fine, and you may have an issue with your motherboard or RAM. If the computer won't start at all, open the case and then turn the power supply on and attempt to start the computer. Observe the motherboard to see if any lights turn. If no lights turn on and there is no sign that power is being supplied to any of your devices, there's a decent chance that the power supply has burned out. If your computer experiences periodic crashing, feel the case near the power supply to see if it is hotter than normal, and smell the air. If the case is much hotter than normal or you smell burning, your power supply might be overheating, and may be damaged. http://pcsupport.about.com/od/toolsofthetrade/f/powersupplytest.htm hope this helps

Have changed power supply but no response from unit?

The PSU could be broken, has it recently turned of suddenly? if so check for the smell of burning near where the plug goes in to the computer.

Inside I smell something burning and my power port is loose.

Your Notebook PC needs a new power supply or at least a new power port, or it may self-destruct really soon (like tonight). Unplug your PC and quickly backup your important data to a flash drive.

I wouldn't plug anything into the power port until it gets service, and unplug it overnight (or there could be a fire).

The owners' manual doesn't describe power supply replacement:

Here's a picture of the bottom of the system:

Computer won't boot - fan on cpu does not run - cd drive does not power up -

Hi.

If there is no sign of life, then it is usually a power supply problem. Check PSU connector. If PSU fan does not turn on check the power cable. If power cable is good, test power from PSU using a multimeter and eventually replace PSU.

My PC won't turn on, but the power light on the front of my computer is blinking. None of the fans inside my case are spinning. Does this mean I have to replace my motherboard, power supply, or something...

Sounds like your Power Supply Unit(PSU) is playing up, have you installed anything new lately like more Ram, Graphics card etc.. maybe a Stick of Ram is failing, no smell of burning from the Tower/Case? If your P.C. is no longer in warranty then disconnect it from the mains supply and then remove side panel and just take a look for and signs of damage burnt, smell of smoke etc.. if no signs of that then plug in the mains and watch and listen ofr anything strange.. continuous beeps, wurring sounds etc.. If the only thing is the front light still blinks then check on the internet via another P.C. and look for troubleshooting solutions on the make and model of your P.C. website. If still no joy you could possibly change the PSU over for a new higher WATT one, they come at reasonable prices.

My son's Emachines T1742 Desktop was left on overnight and when try wake it from sleep mode but it was completely turned off, tried starting it up and I only get a nonstop blinking of the orange and green...

Well maybe a power surge happened last night.

Is the computer plugged into a power protector? If not maybe something got fried.

Check for the smell of burnt components. It smells like burning plastic kind of. If everything looks fine make sure everything is plugged in tightly like the power cord and hard drives etc.

Hope this helped.
