Before I proceed, though, it would help me to know if the cable remote works with the TV, or if neither remote works.

When you use your new remote, then look at the red LED at the end of the remote, but look at it through a cell phone camera. Once you do, press a button on the remote and see if you notice the LED illuminating.

Let me know,so that we could proceed.

Try changing the input device to something you are sure, works such as a DVD player.

Did you select the signal input (source) to HDMI in your TV's menu?
