I'm NOT AN EXPERT I DO MY OWN HOME REPAIRS AS A SINGLE MPM I HAVE TO. I WOULD first check for a loose or kinked wire to the capacitor. then I'd check the capacitor with a multimeter. It may be freezing up like mine did so I'd switch it to the front a\c until it thawed, (if you have one) Just saying because mine was a motorhome, then I kept it at a lower temperature to prevent the freeze. You may also have a hole in the line somewhere. letting the freeon(gas) out.

but make sure the capacitor is discharged before testing it.

SOURCE: duo-therm quick cool

Your compressor is trying to restart after it shuts off which is causing a power draw down changing the sound of the fan speed change. Check voltage power supply and insure that the power supply cord is heavy enough to carry the necessary load.

SOURCE: Air conditioner fan will not come on and unit will run for 1 minute and stop

You hear the compressor kick in (Hum) but no fan comes on? Will the fan come on when just in fan mode, not cool, or do you have that set-up?

SOURCE: RV air conditioner. Compressor running, fan stops before cool

The fan motor is getting hot and going off on the internal overload in the motor.
This is caused by either a low voltage, a bad capacitor, or tight or dry bearings in the motor.
To check the bearings turn the power off to the unit, then spin the fan blade if it spins freely then the bearings are ok.
To check the capacitor you will need some kind of tester or you can buy a capacitor and replace it, that's what a lot of people do. They usually don't cost very much.
To check the voltage you will need a voltmeter and measure the volts at the unit.

I had Ruud heating and cooling installed five years ago. Last summer my electric bill doubled when I began running my air conditioner. It did not do that the first few years that we were in this house. ...

Hello In a way you are stuck with what is called a S.E.E.R. rating which is a statement of efficiency from the manufacturer.Ex: a 10seer is less electricity to run than a 14 seer. The model # would have told me the seer rating.A 4 ton `1 zone is a large unit but even a 10 seer 4 ton is never cost prohibitive to operate and Never doubles the electric bill in 5 days out of thirty. Is the home unoccupied all month and you use it on weekends?Did the neighbor run a strange wire to your property? There might be stray or lost voltage in rare cases if there is poor grounding issues.Has the unit been serviced? A low freon charge will cause a unit to run excessively long and not cool.Do you run the indoor blower all the time.Has there been any other major purchases made (at all) that you plug in?I would look at everything because there is some cause for DOUBLE bill amount not just the cooling bill.Good luck

Amana Cooling Condensing Unit fan won't kick on

be aware that not repairing this asap that you are causing yourself more problems First I would change out the fan capacitor and see if this could be the problem. Secondly if the capacitor isn,t the problem change out the motor . By continuing to allow the system to cycle like this the compressor will take a dive on you costing more . Good Luck

Ruud heat pump outside fan

You may be right in looking at the motor. It uses a different speed on heat than cool. The heat cycle uses low speed, usually red. Some manufactures use blue (medium). Cool uses black, high speed. If you are confident, switch the low speed wire with the high speed and see if this changes anything. If the fan motor isn't the problem, check the other setting (cool) if the overload trips, you may need to look into a new capacitor or compressor, if so, you can install a hard start kit. these are start boosters, and are inexpensice, sometimes they will give another year out of the comp. but I've put them on and they have lasted 5 years.
