Tv making thumping noise

Since you did not mention model number, then depending on year, it is probably time to replace the TV. They are almost disposable these days; meaning cheaper to replace than to repair.

Can bad color wheel cause lamp to not turn on

Actually yes, the thing is that the color wheel is also part opf the light engine system and if it's not working, it will prevent you to see an image, you will need to replace it and it's most probable to fix your issue, of course since it's a Samsunt Tv, you need to identify the type of color wheel that you have, it could either be one with a gold bearing or one with a silver bearing, just identify which one is the one you have, and you'll be goo to go

My new LG LCD TV (3 days old!) suddenly started playing up, last night. I was initially using the receiver unit (with built-in DVD) to play a disc of MPG files, which it did successfully. Then, I tried to...

Good thing the tv is under warranty, theres no magical fix for a problem like this. I would either return it to the store or call for service. If you atempt to do to much to fix it you might voide the warranty, and you should have to do anything to fix it as you said its 3 days old.
