yes there is a fuse on the board located at the base of the unit...if that does not fix problem replace unit.. :)

One person used piano wire, but the diameter must be right so the cleaning beads can slide up and down on the wire when the unit is turned up and down.

I have replaced those wires with chrome plated wire, stainless steel wires and platinum wires. Nothing lasts very long (weeks to a few months). There are no parts available for these machines as far as I know.

The company went under and doesn't service them anymore. It's possible you could find a local repair place that might be able to do something, but there is no authorized or trained service station.

You might be able to pick up spare parts if you scour eBay long enough.

Installation is easy, you just pull up on the tab on the bottom of the filter and pull up. When you are looking at the bulb, turn it 1/4 turn, (2 clicks) and pull it out. That is all there is to it. To stop the crackling sound, you need to remove all of the dust particles from the wire in the back. Sometimes when the unit is extremely dirty you can see sparks emanating from the wire, this is what causes the crackling sound. The unit has a built in cleaner you can lift up and down to perform this task, located on the top, but this doesn't work extremely well.

I usually take a can of compressed air and blow as much of the dust I can off the wire and all surrounding internal areas as I can. This along with a thorough cleaning of the blades should eliminate the crackling noise. Of course, make sure the device is unplugged before performing any cleaning.

Not sure about the smell though. Mine has started to smell a little strange and I haven't figured out how to fix that problem.
