The television won't respond to either it's personal remote or the universal remote from the cable company. This happened once before but my roommate "fixed" it when he hit the TV's remote very hard with his hand.
The universal remote still works with our cable box just fine, and I've tried reprogramming it to the TV numerous times. All of the side buttons on the TV work as well, so I'm pretty sure that it is the remote sensor in the TV.
How can I fix this, or who can I call to fix it for me?
Sparrow00, your fix worked for me, and I think I know why. The 1/8" remote input jack on the back of the TV has electrical contacts inside that are probably there to sense the presence of a plug-in remote. When they detect the insertion of this plug they disable the front panel IR (infrared) receiver and the TV only responds to this plugged-in remote and the buttons on the TV itself. After some period of time these contacts get corroded and the circuit is no longer completed between them. The TV now thinks an external remote is plugged in, and it ignores its own front panel IR receiver.
When you plug a 1/8" plug into this remote socket on the back of the TV it wipes away the corrosion. When you remove the plug the internal contacts conduct properly again and the TV responds to its front panel IR receiver. For best results you should plug a 1/8" headphone plug into this remote jack and twist it a few times, then pull it out and repeat several times. Repeat every frew months or whenever the TV acts up.
Thanks for your solution!
Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!!! Your solution was so easy and it finally worked! Thank you so much. I have tried every remote code known to man and I knew it had to be the sensor. I will spread the word!!
Wow......That took like 10 seconds. Thanks! I was worried I would have to contact "Circuit City" and go the whole protection program route.
this solution really worked. thanks a million. robert
Unfreeking believable, it worked! ElecEngrZ, you are da' man. I can not believe that it worked, but it did. Thank you, Thank you.

Hi White flash 2...my 47Lg70 started having a similar problem after 13 months of use. I switched out the remote control sensor in the TV but it did not work. Assuming that you have no problems with your remote controls, try the following: use an air-can and dust the multiple component input/output slots everywhere on the TV itself. If this doesn't solve the problem, connect standard 1/8" headphones into the remote control OR the headphones jack on the TV. Then unplug the TV for a minute. Plug it back in, turn it on, and see what happens. Hope this helps,...it may not seem relevant, but it works for some reason and several others have posted a similar solution on this website.
About an hour ago I was told that the cable remote stopped working on my 42" LG. Swapped new batteries to no avail. Next tried the original remote as well as one for a LG dvd player, again to no avail.
Next I Googled "LG television remote won't work" and this thread was in the top two. After finding the instruction booklet so I could locate where in the back this remote plug was, I yanked the headphones out of my daughter's laptop (and off her head) and gave your try a whirl.
All remotes now work perfectly. Total elapsed time: 17 minutes.
Thank you all very much for taking the time to post the question and comments. One more thing: May simply be a co-inky dink, but I vacuumed all around the wall-mounted unit yesterday - first time in many months,
Thanks for the insight ElecEngrZ,...that completely makes sense [I wondered how the 1/8" remote jack would be connected to the remote sensor].

You need to lg service in your area. they will get the part for you.should not cost to much
Check the remote control for its infra-red emission. Check it with fresh batteries. Check by pressing each button on it at a time; and see whether all of it generates infrared signal while pressing. If it is found OK, check and replace the infrared sensor inside the TV. If you wish to get some details; check the site linked here. It has details about how to check a remote control; by one among the post. Surf the site with patience. Pull up older posts. http://electronicshelponline.blogspot.com/ If the remote control is found OK; check and replace the infra-red sensor inside the TV. Contact any service technician
This really works! Went to LG support chat after they walked me through a few test, they stated I would have to replace remote sensor board. Tried searching for alternative and came across this suggestion. Unmounted TV from wall followed above directions, tried remote and it work prefectly. Remounted TV and I was done. This suggestion saved me huges $'s!

So, I posted this last summer and had a long and horribly frustrating process trying to get the IR card for my TV. I just got it today (it is now November) and changed it out myself; but of course, that didn't solve the problem. Does anyone know of anything else that could be causing the problem? I am at a loss.

OMG this fix just worked for me as well!! Thank goodness for google! I have bought a universal remote because the LG remote wouldn't work anymore. Have spent weeks trying to get the universal remote to work and my next step was calling a repair man and spending who knows how much money. I just tried this...stuck an earphone cord in the remote socket and the original LG remote works again! AMAZING! Thanks you all!!!
Yay! Worked for me too. Thanks so much!

Put TV back on wall and I was done. This saved me huge $'s!!!
