Check for a diode symbol printed on the board as shown in this link:

diode symbol Bing images

The banded end of the diode is the negative (cathode) end and corresponds to the crossbar on the symbol,

Testimonial: "There is two diode symbols printed, one is of a std diode and the other a zener back to back not sure which way round"

FROM : ROD MYERS [email protected] I NEED TO RUN THE CABLE INPUT THROUGH THE VCR AND THEN TO THE TV. PROBLEM IS I DON'T KNOW HOW TO PROGRAM TV CHANNELS INTO THE PANASONIC VCR. IT CURRENTLY GOES TO CH 2, 3...

If you have the remote for the unit, with the incoming cable connected to the unit, on the remote, press menu/set up button, once in channel set up, select auto search...it may take a couple minutes for all the channels to be found...once complete, select done/exit, or press the menu/set up button again to exit.

any questions, let me know.

I have a sony RM-U800 remote with a missing diode

Hi Keith
As long as the diode will physically fit, you can virtually use any infrared replacement. Just look for an infrared diode that looks similar and fit that. Should be ok.

Samsung DVD/VCR Recorder

Unit dead.
Local repair shop said it's un-econimical to repair.
Admitted they had no service manual.
Said they could 'have a look' but likely repair cost would be over $300. Charged me $50 for quote. Useless Gits.

My opinion & findings.
Power supply sensative to spikes.
I Suggest a power filter in-line with unit.

Disconnected all sub-boards from main.
Hiccuping PSU (5v wobbles between 2&3V).
Replace switchmode IC & feedback IC. No change.
Eventualy identified short-cct diode as listed below.

0402-001194 Diode is a Gen-purpose 200V 2A diode. I used a 1n4007 (1A), so I expect to have to replace it in future. It's "D1S35" located very close to right rear corner of main board, part of 15V and 12V rails. Next time I'll use a 'faster', higher rated diode.
I also had no clock progression. Time could be set but would not advance. Been like that for ages - I thought it was a user clock-setting error. Identified Dead 32.768 khz crystal (XT601).

Hired manual $10 +postage
Non-faulty parts + postage $40
1 diode $1

Satisfaction, plenty.

No power to DVD combo player. VCR OK.

The power circuit for the DVD and the vcr are separate look for a open diode and transistor in the circuit that supply the DVD.GOOD LUCK.
