The pitch of the roof is described as the vertical rise of the roof divided by the horizontal span of the roof. The pitch of the roof is known as slope, and this happens to be a tangent function. If you have access to your attic measure out 12" from edge, then measure straight up from there to roof and that will give you the pitch.
