Thats because the OS is corrupt. Follow the manual and reload the OS, try the 2.43 OS

SOURCE: Dark screen on my TI-84 plus. What to do?

Press the 2nd key (yellow one) and then press the UP arrow to increase brightness or down to decrease but seems like you to need to press UP arrow.

Turn the calculator on. Press and release the [2ND] key, then press and hold the down-arrow key to lighten the screen. If you go too far, use the [2ND] and up-arrow keys to darken the screen.

I have a TI-83 and there has been a dark spot on my screen for several years and it has not been a problem. Try to use yours for as long as possible unless the screen is unviewable.
