Why does my new Crosley refrigerator smell like oil in the freezer section?

Just bought a new Crosley refrigerator and noticed right off the internal temp was at 56. Repairman came out and said it had been sitting long enough in a warehouse probably and the fan was frozen up. He said if I had anymore problems he would replace the fan. After he left everything seemed to be working fine and temp is now at 39 but have horrible smell in the freezer section blowing down into the food section. Smells like oil ....maybe...concerned my food will pick up the smell and taste funny. any ideas?

Get it replaced or paint it lemon yellow. If they argue ask for your money back, if that is a problem contact your BBB and the manufacturer. It comes with an implied warranty to perform.

SOURCE: smells inside freezer and refrigerator even after thorough cleaning, smell is even penetrating food and making it taste bad

Hi there,
First of all , empty out the freezer, leave if off until it fully heats up to room temperature, Clean it out with Vanilla essence and turn back on. Allow the freezer to reach operating temperatures before putting anything in and before you do check to see if the smell is stil there.
Now if it is it means that the freezer's insulated internal wall is damaged and it has allowed seepage out into the bottom trapping some old juices (blood and anything else which may have leaked during a defrost cycle) which have leaked out and constantly breeding underneath the freezer. If this is the case either, find leak and seal it with some good quality mastik sealer not silicone !! or: buy a new one , unfortunatly if it is damaged repair may not be the best solution depending on its age and brand. I hope this helps>

SOURCE: bad smelling water

The water lines are contaminated with bacteria and/or mold. This is a problem with many refrigerators. You need to turn off water and disconnect the feed line and filter. Mix 4 ounces of Clorox(R) in 1 gallon of water and pump it through with a NEW garden sprayer. You can remove the wand and clamp it onto the water inlet. Activate the dispenser while you pump the bleach through the system. Once bleach starts coming out the dispenser, vent the garden sprayer (de-pressurize), Let the bleach sit for 15-20 minutes. Re-attached water using a brand new filter (do not use the old filter and do not put bleach through filter). Run water until no chlorine odor (it can be a while). This process needs to be done at least once a year.

SOURCE: Freezer area smells and ice cubes and butter taste off?

It sounds like the ice maker if equiped. Remove Ice bin and clean out,and try a lite spray of bleach or vinegar (don't mix) If the smell is still happening and comming from ice you may want to install a inline filter.

The refrigerator door was left ajar for several hours. then the ref cooling system was not functioning right after the incident. although the freezer is still doing its job Im worried if its beyond repair....

When the freezer section gets cold and reaches its required cooling temperature, after that the frost on freezer section starts defrosting and the cooling fan in the freezer section blows this cool air from freezer to fridge. But if the defrost cycle does not start then freezer will block the air passing section from freezer to fridge,so the freezer gets cool but fridge section does not cool. Its the defrost problem.Try manual defrost by unplugging the refrigerator from main power outlet for 4 hours then reconnect it and check,if the same problem is noticed again,.If yes then its defrost board problem. The defrost board located in the back of fridge section. You can get required parts from www.repairclinic.com or from online sears part site.------------- Thank you.

I can smell items in my freezer when I open the door of the fridg

Good day,
All cooling in a refrigerator, be it the freezer section, or the fresh food section is performed by the freezer.
The freezer takes care of itself, but also by the function of the fan motor in the freezer, blows a limited amount of the freezer air into the fresh food compartment to cool it to the nominal 37 degrees.

The odor in the freezer is disguised by the extremely cold air, and is not apparent. But that odor when raised to 35 or 40 degrees will become noticeable.
As well, the freezer compartment rises to 30 degrees plus when going thru it's automatic defrost cycle, which occures for approx. 30 minutes once or twice a day, adding to the problem.
Sealing the packages is probably the only real answer.

Thank you for using FixYa.

Freezer not blowing air - bad smell in fridge

Your automatic defroster coil is open and needs to be replaced along with the fan in the freezer that blows the cold air around and also blows air into refrigerator.

Bad smell down below is food rotting in that section because it is not cold enough.

Frisdge/freezer and ice smell

I had a side by side refrigerator with an Ice maker from Sears. The ice it makes smell fishy so bad that I could not use to drink with anything else but throw away to the plants. So I unscrewed the ice maker . It is not that bad, but quite simple to take it out. I noticed rusted pieces of metal generating strong fishy smell. I could not get rid of rust with soap, detergent, oil so I wrap it in plastic bag then screw it back into the refrigerator. Screwing back the ice maker. Voila. The smell is going away. The ice is good. Pina Colada and Daiquiri here we go .
