Why is my ti84 giving me wrong answers when I use trig functions?

I enter the problems correctly, no doubt. Im asking because this online class is telling me I'm wrong. For example, 35Cot(61) gives me the answer 32.87, But my class tells me it's really 19.4. I AM in degree mode. I have no honest idea why this is happening.

My TI-84 calculator often gets the answer right, but when I put 9:5, it gives me the answer 5. But it actually equals 9/5. The calculator thinks I am putting 5. But I'm not. 5:10 gives me the answer 10, but the answer is actually 5/10. It also gets exponents wrong. When I do -2^2. It gives me the answer -4 even though Mrs. Millar told me it is positive 4, and it is positive 4, not -4.

Your right you should be in degree mode. However, my guess is you are somehow entering in cot wrong in your calc. Recall cot = 1/tan! In your graphing calculator enter: 35(1/tan(61) = 19.4.
Hope this helped!

SOURCE: radian mode does not work properly

-1E-13 is a very small number. When doing this kind of a problem you can regard 1E-13 as 0.

Remember that pi is an irrational number. It is only estimated on your calculator. I just played around with a TI-83 and found the following answers:

cos(pi/2) = 0
cos(2*pi + pi/2) = 0
cos(4*pi + pi/2) = 1E-13
cos(20*pi + pi/2) = -1E-13

As you know, that correct answer to each of these is 0. The calculator gives non-zero answers because some very small errors are accumulating. There is nothing wrong with your calculator.

Your calculator is set in radians. Press mode key. Arrow down to 3rd line. Highlight degree and press enter. Your calculator is now in degrees, not radians. To get out of the mode screen and back to home screen, press 2nd and then mode.

SOURCE: my TI-nspire isn't graphing correctly.

Hi,

According to your problem, first check the battery status or replace the battery. It may occur for battery. You need a software and firmware update for this calculator. Reinstallation of software and an update of firmware will solve your problem.

Cannot graph two equations together, & trig graphs are not correct.

At first in Y editor type Y1=2*cosx and for example y2=[5*exp(-x)]-5 and then graphing it. Set RAD mode of course. See captured images

Im getting the wrong answer for when i try to solve for a trig inverse on the ti nspire cx

When you are dealing with trigonometric functions and their inverses, the results depend on the angle unit (degree, Radian, Gradian).
To set the correct angle unit (the one required by your problem)
  1. Turn calculator ON
  2. Press Menu key.
  3. Press 5:Settings>2:Settings>1:General
  4. On the second line Angle, there is a drop-down menu you activate by pressing the Right Arrow.
  5. Select Degree, Radian or Gradian and press Enter.
  6. Using the down Arrow move focus to the bottom of the screen where you can Make Default, or OK.
  7. Press one or the other.
  8. Validate your selection if asked.

I got my Calculator in degree mode but the inverse trig functions are still not working what do I do?

If you mean that the calculator is giving you an error 2 it means that the value cannot be correct, for sin and cos you can only enter numbers between -1 and 1.
If it is giving you the incorrect answer, make sure that the question is not actually in radians and that you are entering the amount in correctly.
If you have anymore questions there is a dedicated website http://www.mathsatsharp.co.za/ where you can leave questions about the SHARP calculators on the student page and they will be answered within a week maximum.

My TI84 plus silver edition calculator is giving me an incorrect sign whenever I do an exponential function. When I type in -25^2, it gives me -625 instead of 625. How do I fix this?

It's giving you the correct answer. It's calculating the negative of 25 squared. 25 squared is 625, and the negative of that is -625.

If you want to calculate the square of negative 25, you need to tell the calculator that.

Press ( (-) 2 5 ) ^ 2 ENTER .

Make sure you have the proper angular mode set. The TI-84 can work with degrees or radians.

Press MODE to bring up the mode screen. Use the arrow keys to highlight either "Radian" or "Degree" on the third line and press ENTER. Press 2ND [QUIT] to exit the mode screen.

If this doesn't do it, please reply to this post giving an example of a calculation and the answer you're getting from the calculator.

I am using a TI84 and doing trig functions. Tangent in particular. I keep getting different answers from classmatez, yet we're typing it in our calculators the same. Whats wrong?

Push the "mode" button and look at the third row. you should propably have it standing on "Radian" instead of "Degree".. It was a few years since i used my TI-83 but i remember thath ther's a difference between those two!!! =P

Inverse Functions on Casio fx-270W PLUS don't seem to work

because cotangent, cosecant, and secant are all inverse trig functions, just type in 1 / |shift| trig function and the number if you are finding the angles. It might not be a dedicated button, but its an extra push, and it will give you the same result. *note that I put the shift press only because that is how you get the inverse tan to get an angle from a tan ratio.*
