Remove the 9-volt battery to be tested from the device it is powering.
Read the instructions of the testing device to ensure an understanding of how to connect the battery to the tester properly.
Attach the battery to the testing device according to the manufacturer's instructions, being careful to attach the positive terminal of the battery to the positive input of the testing device, which will be indicated by a "+" or "positive." Attach the negative terminal of the battery to the negative input of the testing device, which will be indicated by a "-" or "negative."
Read the display of the testing device to determine the status of the battery. If the voltage is low, replace the battery with a new one.
The electrical output of a 9-volt battery will decrease slowly until it reaches a level that is no longer adequate to power a 9-volt device. When the output of the battery decreases to 5.5 volts or less, the battery should be replaced as the power output has diminished to a point of imminent failure.
