Lens cover stuck open, power wont come on

I turned the power on to take a picture. It chimed like it was coming on. The lens cover opened, but the lens did not pop out. The power never really came on - none of the displays work - and I cant get it to come on or get the lens cover to close.

I had a similar experience - camera had been out of use for some time: the battery has become "tired" i,e. does not hold charge for as long as it should or deliver as much current as it did when new which explains why the most power-intensive action i.e. pushing the lens around is beyond it - the battery indicator was low after a few attempts. Eventually after leaving it on until it switched off and recharging for a day a few times it is working much better, though I will be replacing the battery. I am a fan of good but dated technology, I have to admit.

I have been told by a camera mechanic i contacted on line (in America) that there is a fuse within the camera which is very small and soldered onto one of the boards. I was unable to get a precise location and the only details were that this component was either white with black writing or black with white writing. This may have a bearing on your problem.

Lens error

that could be the lens cover not opening all the way, try and look at the lens as if you were doing self-portrait, and power on. if lens cover opens all the way but lens doesn't come out, the lens might be stuck or motor broke.

You may have the same problem that i had. It does involve taking the camera apart. Not overly difficult - just fiddly.

Camera lens stuck

Look at some of my posts today.
This may be that the lens is off track and may be able to be pushed back by a little force as you start the camera....see my other posts on this problem.

Lense Cover Stuck

Try blowing lots of compressed air around the open lens shutter to clean the mechanism. Or use a hair dryer for a few seconds (don't want to heat up the camera). Also with the lens barrel extended and pointed downward, tap the lens barrel with a pencil while you extend and retract the lens by powering the camera on and off. A grain of sand in the mechanism is usually the culprit, and you want to try to dislodge it.

You can open it up, but only as a very last resort. The above procedures usually work if you try them enough. But for those particularly nasty stuck mechanisms, here's an example repair on a Canon Powershot A400 (do this at your own risk, and be aware this will void your warranty):

The lens cover wont open

If debris like sand or dirt get into the mechanism which closes that cover it will jam shut. Try gently placing something pointy in the gap between the two blades of the cover. Do not force them apart, if this is going to work they should free with very little pressure. Be very careful not to touch the lens especially if you are using something metal to separate the cover.
