Hi Rick:
"Bump feed" spools are designed to be able to be re-loaded.
There is usually a screw-in retainer (often with a reverse thread so it turns clockwise to remove) that allows the spool to be removed. Then it is a matter of winding on enough line to go and attack the weeds again.
There should be 2 plastic tabs which you have to push in, this removes the wider outer base cover of the strimmer spool, giving you access to the bump cap and line spool.
Depending on the style you have, one looks to be a whole replaceable spool unit, one looks like a re-threadable spool.

You line up the head with "arrows" by turning the plastic bump knob on extreme bottom. When arrows line up with the head then you insert your line through the slots "OR" you insert the line in one side and it comes out the other side. Then you have to push pressure DOWN ******* the bump head while twisting the bump head clockwise to "pull in" the string until there's only about six inches left remaining on the "shortest" piece hanging out the side. use scissors to make the lines equal in size before staring the trimmer. Hope this helps.
You should be able to remove the bump knob and then the inner spool. To keep the shaft from turning, try to grasp the dust cover with some vise grips or large adjustable pliars to hold it and just remove the knob. Spray penetrating oil under it if necessary and let it soak a couple hours to remove rust and corrosion and try it again. If there are any holes above the head in the dust cover or arbor, try to insert something in there to lock it up, like a slender scredriver. Here are the line spool removal instructions. See pages 14 and 15 in this manual. http://dl.owneriq.net/e/e795beb6-5dd6-4dbd-a82f-57b8d1a69355.pdf

If it's like my Ryobi, the alignment arrows are for feeding in string, not removing the spool. When aligned with the arrows, you should be able to insert two pieces of line into opposite sides of the housing. The ends of the line will come out of the spool next to a tiny hole. Put the end of each of the two lines into the holes, then pull the two lines from the outside. This will lock the ends of the line into the tiny holes in the housing. Now you can turn the housing by hand to wind the lines onto the spool. I think it will take about ten feet of line (on each side).
Alternatively, spin the bump stop out of the assembly. This holds the spool in, so when the bump stop is removed, the spool comes right out.
