Got my wife's salt water damaged timex heart rate monitor watch here. Opened it up, and one corner of the screen looks a bit faded and there's white corrosion mess. Can I dip in metho to clean away residue...

Do not use any chemicals. They will damage your watch. The only thing you can use is ZIPPO, RONSON e.t.c. lighter fluid, but do not dip any watch parts in it. You have to use cotton swabs. Dip the swab in lighter fluid and then clean the parts. Do not use a lot of pressure. Change the swabs constantly and blow off excess of lighter fluid all the time. It will take a while, but this is the best solution. When part is clean enough, use dry cotton swabs to clean off the oily residue. Rate me, plz.

Start buttons don't work after battery change Adidas Sports Timer

You will have to open your watch, because the contacts or contact springs are not stiff enough, so, you need to make them stiffer.
Do as follows:
1) Open your watch caseback
2) Extract the movement (carefully and using tweezers), do not touch dial with fingers,
3)Take small brush and lighter fluid (ZIPPO) and clean all pushbuttons in case from inside and out pushing them rapidly, then use dust blower to dry the fluid out,
4)On the movement you will see contacts corresponding to each pushbutton on the case. Use needle or sharp metal pin to clean (scrape) off any visible residue from these contacts till they are shiny.
5)Pull all contacts on movement sligtly outwards using tweezers but be careful not to brake. This will make them stiffer.
6)Reassemble the watch and the problem should be sorted.

How can you tell from a genuine or fake carrera watch

Paste this link into your browser and discover Carrera:

http://www.tagheuer.com/the-collection/carrera/men/automatic-chronograph-tachymetre/index.lbl?w=CV2010.BA0786

Fake watches are poorly made, writings are smudged, Watch itself is much lighter in weight than the original, movements are of very poor quality e.t.c.
The original watch oozes with quality and every tiny detail is superbly finished. All writings are crisp and sharp. Materials are of the top quality only.

Pocketwatch runs fast

Such a fast gaining usually is caused by dirty or magnetized hairspring, resulting in uneven coil amplitude (some of the coil rows are sticking together or touching each other). This causes the watch to run unbelievably fast.
To get the watch properly fixed you need to give to the watchmaker.
Alternetively; you can fix it yourself, but it will not last long.
For this you will need:
Case opener,
Dust blower (resin ball with nozzle),
Lighter fluid (ZIPPO),
Dropper (like one in eyedrops package).
Do as follows:
Open watch caseback,
Check for the fastest moving part in watch movement and you will see the hairspring fitted on it (pulsing outwards and inwards very fast).
Fill the VERY CLEAN dropper with lighter fluid.
Put ONE drop of lighter fluid on hairspring (DO NOT TOUCH IT),
Wait for a 10 seconds,
Dry out the lighter fluid with dust blower by vigorously squeezing it and pointing the nozzle on to hairspring from approx. 2-3 inches away.
Lay the watch on the table (dial down) and cover it with a clean, dustless cup. Leave for 15 minutes.
Fit the caseback on and enjoy your watch again.

Discolored white nautica watch band

If your watch band have UV sensitive pigmentation in it, there is nothing you can do, but buy the new band.
Find your nearest jeweller and ask to clean watch band in ultrasonic cleaner for 1 hour. If this kind of cleaning doesn't help, that means your watch band is UV sensitive and is and will be discolouring more and more by the time.
Alternatively you can try to clean it with the lighter fluid (ZIPPO). Soak a soft cloth in to lighter fluid and clean the band. Start with a small area inside band to make sure the fluid is not reacting as dissolver, as some resins react quite vigorously and tend to transform into chewing gum sort of state.
And again- if this cleaning doesn't help, the band is UV sensitive and discolouring is taking place.
That discolouring is happening becouse some of the colour pigments used in resin manufacture are sensitive to ultraviolet light and when exposed to sunlight or daylight, they react in a chemical
way, changing molecular structure, wich we see as the colour change. This process can not be reversed and this is why the band can not be cleaned.

The setup button doesnt seem to do anything

There is nothing to do with battery. You have dirty setting button or oxidized plate contact or weak pushbutton spring. To fix that you have to dismantle your watch.
Take the movement out and clean the pushbutton in case from both sides with tiny brush and lighter fluid (Zippo). Dry out with dust blower. Get small steel pin and clean (scrape) coresponding contact on plate clean of any visible residue. Use dust blower again. Strengthten coresponding contact spring by slightly pulling it outwards. Reassemble watch.

Good luck
