ok guys, after about 10 years of not using my ti-83, i put the new batteries in and got the black screen you are all talking about.. came to this site.. saw no solutions.. kept looking.
I've fixed my calculator, but my brain won't tell me exactly how.. but i followed those instructions..
you CAN see what is on your screen if you tilt it under the light ... just fiddle around until you can see faint writing on your screen under the black.
Press window

i have these entries in my calculator
xmin=-10
xmax=10
xscl=1
ymin=-10
ymax=10
yscl=5
xres=2

then go and press second and the down arrow to lighten your screen. it should work.

I had the same problem with a TI-83 once. Each time it was powered on a fully black screen would show. It would NOT power off by pressing the keys. A battery had to be removed to power it down. (The contrast could NOT be adjusted with the 2nd and arrow keys; it would do nothing other than display the black screen.) Try pressing DEL and/or CLEAR as you power it back on. I think I held down both DEL and CLEAR to fix mine. It took me MANY tries to get it to work though. I was about to give up on it, and it began to work, so be patient! NOTE: This may ERASE ALL YOUR PROGRAMS!!! That wasn't an issue for me because I didn't have anything on the calculator. Good luck! :)

I have a TI-84 Silver Plus and the same thing happened to me. I was desperate to fix it because I had math finals the next day. So I pressed the blue '2nd' button, and held down the down arrow and it worked! If that doesn't work, go see if it can be repaired somewhere!

I had this problem once with a TI-83. It would NOT power off after that black screen came up. I had to remove a battery to shut it off.

I held down DEL and/or CLEAR when pressing the on key. That fixed it. I had to try it many times though before it worked. Be patient! I think when it finally worked I had held down both DEL & CLEAR upon pressing the ON key.

NOTE: This procedure MAY ERASE YOUR PROGRAMS. My calculator didn't have any programs, so it wasn't an issue for me.

Good luck! :)

Hi. I changed the batteries on my TI-86 and when I tried to turn it back on the screen was completely black. Do you know what the issue could be?

TI calculators have an annoying habit of dimming the screen when the batteries are changed so that it appears as if the calculator isn't turning on. Turn the calculator on (or at least press the ON key). Press and release the 2ND key. Press and hold the Up-arrow key for a few seconds and see whether the screen becomes legible.

If the screen is completely black, go the other way, using the Down-arrow instead of the Up-arrow.

If this doesn't do it, please reply to this post and we'll go on from there.

Turned on ti 86 and have a black screen. I have replaced all of the batteries and still is black.

Whenever the screen is full and a line with calculation result comes up at the bottom of the screen, the screen all of a sudden shows things in a weird way and can't be read. By press "2nd+mode"(=quit), or try reset button (a small hole which a pin can only be used to press it to RESET. Gud Luck

Black-Screen/Black-Pixel Fix for TI-Calculator

This will erase all memory and reset defaults.

1. Remove 1 AAA Battery
2. Press and Hold 'ON' for 30 seconds
3. Replace AAA Battery
4. Adjust Contrast to appropriate level

If this fails, try again with ALL Batteries removed including
the backup Lithium Battery.

If all else fails, try the following reset procedure:

1. Remove ALL Batteries (inc. Backup)
2. Let Calculator sit with no batteries for 2~4 hours.
3. Hold 'ON' for 30 seconds.
4. Replace all the batteries (May be good idea to use new batteries
just in case old ones were dead)
5. Turn on Calculator
6. Change Contrast to appropriate level

- Remember to use correct batteries or calculator may not work. The
correct batteries are Alkaline, Rechargable Batteries are TOO WEAK,
Heavy Duty batteries are TOO STRONG.

Black screen

Try 2nd Down Arrow. Your contrast may be turned up too high. This can appear to happen with new batteries.
