SOURCE: Homelite Trimmer Pull Start Cord

The part no. for the Spring and container is A98773A. You can Google the PN and find many sources. Expect to pay between $10.00 to $15.00. I like m-and-d.com If they have it in stock you will normally get it in 3 to 4 days.

SOURCE: How do I remove the clutch unit on my Homelite

I believe there is a screw in the middle of the drum that you will have to access where the flexable shaft inserts. I believe this is a star type head.

L pulled starter cord on my Homelite line trimmerHLT25cs, it would not engage and I heard a noise as I pulled . there was no resistance on the pull, but it recoiled just fine. what do I need to do?

try service manual via http://www.manualsonline.com

For your machine. Depending on age the "clutch" is not engaging on the shaft for some reason. It may be that some screws have come loose or missing. You may need to buy a new recoil mechanism.

Rope will not recoil complety

Replacing a pull cord is not easy. After you remove the shaft, then the drum cover, you are left with the drum and clutch. There is a screw in the center of the drum which has to come off. Then there is a the clutch which if not removed correctly will come apart on you. Only after both parts are remove can you get to the pull cord.

The cord will not retract

Disassembly will be required to fix this. This is a labor intensive procedure to just get to the recoil/starter unit so it can be inspected for the problem. Here is how you get there.

Remove the tube that holds the flex-drive shaft from the front of the motor cover.Remove the rear engine cover. Remove the throttle cable from the carburetor. Mark and unplug any wires for the on/off switch that go to the ignition coil (underneath front cover) if possible. Now if you have pulled the driveshaft tube out of the way, the clutch drum is up next. Inside it, screwed into the very end of the engine's crankshaft is a Torx #20 screw. Before you loosen it, you will have to lock up the engine. To do so, remove the spark plug. Pull on the starter until the piston is down, then insert a length of clean, soft rope into the engine. The engine will come up and compress the rope, thus locking it in place to allow clutch drum and clutch removal. Loosen the T-20 (Star bit or Torx head) screw inside the drum.. You may be able to remove it with a long thin-blade screwdriver also.It probably won't come completely out...it is made this way. Next, remove the clutch. It is screwed onto a small threaded section of the crankshaft Removal is counterclockwise.. It will be pretty tight. To help, apply peneterating oil. Whack the ears of the clutch near the center with a hammer and a dull flat-blade chisel or a small piece of wood unless there are bolts. then use a wrench. It will turn counterclockwise for removal and there will probably be a removal direction arrow on it's face. After getting that off, remove the Torx screws holding the cover to the engine. The starter unit should be mounted inside as it mates with the top of the flywheel to start the motor. Remember to preload tension (5-7 turns) on the starter unit. Make sure the handle is installed. Jam the unit with a screwdriver or vise grips so you can insert and tie off the new rope. Then remove jam device and let recoil pull your new rope into place while holding the handle. Reassemble and you are done. Disassembly requires Torx head drivers and a good flat-blade screwdriver. Post back if needed

How do you remove the clutch drum assembly for model #316.791890

Your clutch drum is held on with a Torx head screw which is screwed into the end of the crankshaft. To lock the engine up so crank won't turn, remove the spark plug, rotate the engine so the piston is down and put some clean pull rope or otherwise soft material in cylinder. ...make sure it is something that won't hang up in the ports on the sides. Then when you rotate the crank, it will compress the rope or soft material, locking up the engine to facilitate removal of the Torx screw, The screw will come loose but will probably not come all the way out...that's just the way they made it.
